The 5W-40 Amsoil is excellent stuff, albeit (and DESPITE it) not being "starburst" approved. The only problems you could have with Redline/Motul/Fuchs (Silkolene) or any of the other high moly/zinc/phos. "boutique" oils is if your motor is getting EXCESSIVE amounts of oil past the rings and/or the valve seals. This will eventually kill your cats (NOT the meow kind ), IF you still have them. The Amsoil meets the reduced zinc SM ratings, so this is NOT a potential problem for it (even with excessive consumption), as compared to the others mentioned.

Yes, Patman has forgotten more than any of us will ever know on this topic, hopefully he'll chime in and sum it up for us. He's gained a lot of his knowledge over on www.bobistheoilguy.com If you have about a year to waste reading all the threads over there, it is a useful and informative site. Just BEWARE that MOST of the members over there are EXTREMELY anti-domestic/GM, and NEVER hesitate to rip/BASH/destroy and HATE ON them, every and any chance they get (even when it has NOTHING to do with the given topic at hand, they'll bring it in, and the mods will do nothing about it!!!). So if you are defensive about your car/choices, and do not like being told what a P.O.S. it is, DO NOT go over there!!!!

Thanks for the warning about GM bashing.

I switched from M1 5w-30 to M1 10w-30 cant tell if its helped. I used to burn half a quart every other month or every 1000 miles.

it won't help at all. it's the same thickness at operating temps. there is no difference between 5W-30 and 10W-30 unless the engine is at cold startup. after 5 minutes of idling, you'll see no improvement.

get off shitty M1 30 weight. unless you switch to a totally different oil or step up to a 40 weight, you'll still keep burning half a quart every other month/every 1,000 miles.

Hey Choco,
I went to two different automotive stores and could not find M1 5w-40, so i bought 0w-40. I will change the oil tomorrow.

5-40 M1 is hard to find, 5-40 Rotella Synthetic would have been a better option imho than 0-40 M1. Please tell us you at least got the 15K mile formula?

i'd stay away from redline because it's not starburst approved. i've heard redline has good detergents, but i've also heard of problems resulting from running redline oils. if it works for you, that's great, but personally i'd never touch the stuff.
What's starburst approved?

let us know if the engine runs better. if you're running M1 5W-30, i guarantee it'll be quieter and consume less oil. just keep in mind that 0W-40 is still mainstream oil. it still shears faster compared to oils like GC 0W-30 and M1 5W-40, amsoil, etc...keep an eye out for 5W-40. if you see some, buy it!

Between the two stores they only had 1 quart of 5w40. I changed my oil today. I'll let you know how it holds up.

I am running M1 0w-40 and I love it. How thin it is cold doesnt matter except on start up and warm up. It performs like a 0 weight on startup which is good because that is when the msot damage can occur and you want the best lubrication.......then when you egt going it is 40 weight.

I run M1 10w30 in the Camaro with no issues yet. of course every week I check the levels in both cars. If i start using too much, I am upping to 5w40
