Post the shops number, I'd like to call them and school them on properly fixing a car.

I don't know what kind of contract you have with them, but I wouldn't let them anywhere near my car for even suggesting that, let alone have them do any work. You car came with posi from the factory. Maybe they think since you are "just a girl" it would be better to make it a peg leg so you'll just spin the inside tire if you get on it too hard going around corners, but frankly that's not their decision.
They're trying to screw you. At the very least have someone who actually knows cars go and make sure you even need a new rear end (maybe one of the guys there wants yours for his car).

At the very least you can get a stock 10 bolt with a torsen, used for $250 or less.

They are rippin you off. The open case empty for your car is about 75.00 dollars new and genuine. Throw in the internal kit thats 40.00 dollars. I would say the parts total would run maybe 200.00.
Sounds like there puttin in a junkyard rear in there to me

+1 to what Jakes said. I was thinking the same thing, that they were gonna get an entire rear from a junkyard axle tubes and all. You might even get stuck with less than your factory gear ratio.
I'm at work right now and an Auburn for your car is $390. Installation and the jobber break a shop gets, the $500 your BF said makes sense to me.
Please do not let them do this.

Well, looks like you have no choice but to get that Moser 12 bolt now, or a ford 9"

On a more serious note, I seriously hope you do not let them put the open diff in. Thats absurd, and who the hell lifts a car with a damn forklift!?!? A professional shop most definitely shouldn't!

Well, Revolution, just help her to convince him that since the open diff is NOT a stock part that it is inappropriate for the car.
AGAIN: NOT A STOCK PART
If its an open diff from a Camaro its a V6 and not a Z28

Those people are idiots Have your BF go down there on his own and ask them WTF they're thinking. Your stepdad obviously has no clue either. Show him this thread and see what he thinks about it. I agree with the others as well about getting the car outta that shop all-together. A forktruck, my goodness what retards

Only if it is an air locker or electric locker (magnet). The only GM that comes from the factory with a Locker like that is the Hummer,I think...
Get that car outta there they sound like they shouldnt be workin on bicycles. They probaly wont set the gears up right and they will be loud as hell, and make sure they use friction modifier in your rear. Auburn comes with it now but the way it sounds they wouldnt use it anyhow.
Make it easy on yourself and have someone else do the rear on the car. Hopefully someone who knows what they are doing.

well the good news is that my stepdad told them that he does not agree to have anything put into the car until he looks underneath it himself to see whats wrong with it. he says he is most likely gonna take it to where my bf said. but the only thing is that that place seems to have done a great job on the body of my camaro, so to that i have no problems, but we'll see what happens

YES! Tell your dad that since they are putting in something that is LESS THAN STOCK, it could be dangerous to his daughter!! BTW; if you do have a choice in the matter, the Auburn Pro, Eaton (CF) Posi and especially the True Trac are all excellent limited slip diffs, as well as being stronger (at least slightly) than the stock Auburns or Torsens.
