Default Auburn Posi Diff. or Non Posi Diff.

ok so i have a 99 camaro z28 in the auto body shop and i call the aut body place up today and they tell me the differential is broken and needs to be replaced with a new one....they tell me that they are going to buy a non posi something differential and are charging me $1,000 for the differential and labor....but my bf got pissed at me and says that my camaro needs an auburn posi differential and that he can get it for $500 and that the auto body place knows **** about camaros and that he knows more cuz he reads so much about them and has a 94 camaro z28...honestly idk which is better...im not paying for any of these repairs my stepdad is so i cant really decide which one the auto body place puts in my car, my stepdad doe, but i'd like to know whats best for my 99 camaro z28 since it is having so much work done to it...whats a good differential? cuz IDK

first off if anyone screwed up my car like that by jacking it up i wouldnt ever let them do anything to my car and would take it back ASAP and when you get the radiator replaced take it to someone who actually knows what the hell they are doin. id probably would have some words with them too but thats me.

i agree with the b/f, my g/f had something like that happen to her shes gotta 02 Z and was given all this b/s from the body shop. they are the body shop they dont know mechanics. get ya a auburn and a set of 4.10's and you'll be very happy.

single traction is just well gay if it didnt come with it dont down size to it. if you go with the auburn it looks like it might even be cheaper.

i know a friend that put an eaton carrier(500bucks) in his 10bolt with some 3:73gears(motive I believe) a new auburn is better than a torsen one. Post in the gear section for more opinions.

ok guys i dont usually like being treated like a girl but in this case i need u to speak in a manner that i will understand cuz i dont know as much as i'd like so i dont understand everything, and my car had more damage than just the diff. done to it so im sure that is a factor as well... i mean the whole rear right 1/4 panel was ruined and had to be fixed and my t top was damaged too and right LCA broke...i mean this is all from the impact of the crash...

please get the posi diff. if you went with a non posi unit it would be like a downgrade. an analogy might be like if you blew you're V8 having the shop replace it with a V6. its not as big of a downgrade as that would be but similar in a way.

ok so i hear the posi is the best choice, but the auto body shop insists that for my 5.7L V8 the non posi is best and they say that they have worked on many camaros b4 and they are working with camaro specialists and that they will not install anything on my car that they do not find best for it...and another thing, my stepdad has some contract with them on it...so idk what to do...

i would think that if the non posi was better, it would have come that way, or at least been available as an option. it appears that these tools don't know how to lift a camaro, much less know what is best for them. i'd tell them to not even think about putting that **** in there. just my $.02

its a no brainer.. get the posi.. if the shop is giving you problems... they are morons. i have never heard that downgrading your car is best for it. ask them politely if they were dropped on their heads when they were little.. and then take your car somewhere else.

That shop has NO IDEA about our cars.

98+ 5.7L V8 cars got torsen or auburn posi differentials.

open differential is NOT good, whoever tells you this is smoking something wrong.

At the least, I would order a SLP take off torsen posi. It's about $100US and you can get them at SLP or Summit etc.

If they still insist on sticking on an open differential, then I would get that car out of there ASAP and find a shop that knows more.

they are trying to rip you off and take advantage of you for being a girl. see, an open diff is cheap, so they buy an open diff and install it and charge you 1k for the parts and labor and make buku bucks..........its common business........

well said ^^^ bww3588. they sound so stupid id get another body shop to work on it then move it to a mechanics shop for the differential. it will not perform better with an open rear end the shop is so stupid. it makes me want to hit the owner in the face. why do you think the 6 cyl come with open and v8s come with posi? its a way better way to get all the power out you got to the ground. ur boyfriend wins! (i went through the same thing with my girlfriend when she got rearended and they had to replace her exhaust. it was going to be more $ than a stock setup so i talked her into magnaflow.)

a posi unit = 2 wheels spin when you jump on the gas

an open differential = one wheel spin

98 and up fbodies with a v8 came with a posi of some type STOCK. either auburn or torsen. posi= stock replacement, open differetial = custom crap rear. if your stock rear end broke than get stock replacement!!! POSI
