Pay the car off as quick as possible, but it will still probaly take atleast 1year to pay off the ride. I think you could save a few hundred and buy a few mods like exhaust, but don't do anything extreme like engine swap until the car is paid off.

few months after i bought the car i did a cam, headers and true duals. and that was back in 04. now im about to leave for 6 months and if i dont sell the car first, ill probably pay all of it, or most of it off when i get back. then ill do major mods (rear end, forged motor, etc.)
if you have a steady income, make your payments, pay other bills, save a little for emergencies, and mod with the rest.

I own my car (title in hand) and I'm modding it as much as I can (haven't driven it since May or June because of that )...I make a monthly payment on my truck, so I do simpler stuff thats easy to undo (though I love the truck and plan to keep it after I own it) like the stereo and clear corners...I might build it an exhaust soon, but I'll also keep the stock one. I have some mod plans for the truck after the title is in my hand, but thats a couple years off (unless I decide to just pay it off fast after I'm done with the current phase of mods to the car).
Car is an LSx powered T56 converted 95 Caprice, truck is a 2002 Silverado 2500 HD 6.0 4WD SCLB...sometimes I wish it was a Duramax...but oh well.

my car had a 1000 miles on it when i cut the exhaust off and installed a borla. 1500 miles when i did the brake upgrade. Knew i was keeping the car for a long time so i had no problems modding before it was paid off.

I asked the salesman if I could have money off if they didn't give me a warranty because I knew I would void it before long anyway. Picked up the car with 45 miles on it. Had it at the track with temp tags on it and before I made the second payment it had a lid, MAF, LT's, ORY, and muffler.
Thinking about it, I now have more aftermarket parts on it than I have stock parts.
I even had 0% interest but I paid it off early anyway.
I really don't see much problem with modding a rental if it makes you happy!

i threw a pretty nice stereo in my car the first year of a 4 year loan and low buck bolt-ons like a lid and !cags. it has to get a clutch in it and i'm replacing that with a ls7, but as far really "modding" before the car is paid off, no.
if something breaks i'll put a better component in its place. but i dunno, i just feel kinda wierd spending a shitload of money on something that i dont 'really' own yet.
i'm itchin' to start tho. its kinda humbling to know that every other darn ls1 fbody out there is just as fast or faster than mine. i'd like to at least be in the mid range.
