how would it know when youre crashing?

or it kicks in after the airbags go off and the crash is over? which is pointless.

it is a circular buffer, meaning that the data constantly overwrites itself.

when an event occurs, that data is stored in permanant memory.

More like it transfers the continuously recorded data to hard memory.

I love my '98. It runs like new with 140K on it. No piston slap, no oil consumption, and a pretty damn good trap speed for just bolt ons with the "crappy" heads.

I love my 98 and am glad I got it. Never had an issue and after modding it, its wicked fast and no engine issues at all. I did replace the heads and the oil pump when I modded for security and HP, but it was awesome and just fun to drive before I touched it. Almost sorry I messed with it just because it was such a sound and stable car and the MPG's were amazing. If I were to get another one, it would be a 98 also.

Wow, I never knew any of this about the "black boxes," and I'm glad I know now because I would never own a car that could potentially incriminate me.

I really think this is the biggest shortcoming on the 98's IMO, as upgrading to a 99+ pcm/harness isn't really feasible for most people. Most other undesirable 98 quirks can be reversed with bolt ons. The pcm has been the only thorn in my side as far as modding goes with my car. All the cool & helpful tuning features that are available only on 99+ literally cuts the time it takes to tune a car in half, not to mention most of the custom operating systems are 99+ only.

The crash data recorder is integrated into the the airbag derm module under the center console. It records vehicle speed, seat belt usage but does not have access to tp or pcm related information. It has a built in accelerometer that starts recording a myriad of factors when it determines based off the rate of deceleration a crash is imminent.

Getting stock 99-00 or 01-02 heads is a waste of time. If your going to do stock LS1 heads, make them the 01-02 241's and port them.

Quote: as upgrading to a 99+ pcm/harness isn't really feasible for most people.

Is upgrading as simple as getting a new harness and pcm and then tuning?

If you're talking about something like ported stock heads, you shouldn't see any difference power wise between 806, 853, or 241 assuming they were all "worked" the same way by the machine shop.

Ive treated my 98 with care and it has treated me back the same way. Tuning seems to be the biggest quirk for most, but its just a bit more difficult, not impossible.

How come nobody picks on the 99-00 they also dont got an ls6 intake and they got the small injectors, to me it seems that adding an ls6 intake to a 98 would make it the quickest of them all.

Now i own a 98 and the other thing that i have heard in several places on the 98's that several motors were built with porus blocks. And in the long run you would need to replace the block. BUT I have never had any problems with my 98. seems for som reason to run stronger than my old 99 did.

This 806 head inferiority thing is getting old, Show me the Proof !
I am an open minded guy but like I said earlier it doesn't mean squat if they show less than 10 HP difference from a later head. The more powerfull car is not always the Fastest.
