Unhappy WTF!? My car just de-modded itself....

So I did the DLR/Auto headlight disable mod to my Camaro back in '04 using the instructions below:

http://www.xse.com/leres/ss/drl.html

Now, I've done this mod to quite a few F-bodies, for friends and on other F-bodies I've owned as well. It's always worked great without an issue....until today.

I was out in the garage today and decided to fire up the Camaro. To my surprise and dismay, the headlights came on.....; and I'm thinking.....

So I turn it off, and back on again. No lights. Good. Let the car idle for a few moments behind my back, and guess what?... Yep, the lights came back on.

I pull everything apart, get to the DRL box, and open it up. Sure enough, my soldering job must have sucked, because the solder had broke.

What I don't get is, how the hell did it break just sitting there in storage? Last time I had the car running everything was fine. WTF!?

Maybe it was the cold weather, this is the coldest winter we've had in Chicago in about 10 years; had quite a few nights with temps in the -5 to -12*F range, which brought the temp in my garage into the teens. Most winters it barely drops below freezing in that garage.

Ah well, at least it's an easy fix.

it was the "break in" job you did on the soldering....

I've had more crap just break while sitting than you'd imagine....all non-car stuff, but still it broke while just sitting.

Well hopefully it won't happen again. I tried something different this time, I put a solid bead of solder between the two terminals on the circuit board rather than using that frail little piece of wire again. This was much easier considering the terminals are just a couple millimeters apart. I think in the future I'm going to do them all this way. I've always had a hell of a time trying to solder in that tiny piece of wire, and if it sticks up just a bit too high then it scraps aganist the plastic cover during reassembly. Maybe that's why my last one broke....

Seems to be working fine now, no more auto headlights.

Why don't you just disconnect the wire harness and leave it like that. That's what I did and everything works like I want it to. No auto headlights and no DRL's. If I want the DRL's on I turn them on.

Sell the car. Buy an import. Maybe an RSX.

The instructions said that the "BRAKE" light won't work if you just disconnect it. I never tried for myself, but figured that the website was accurate.

If you do, I'd suggest just running a bead of solder between the terminals. It's easier, and gives you a stronger bond than a tiny wire and lower profile, thus fitting back into the outer shell easier.

Why would you not just remove the light sensor itself? No point to close the circuit, I never had problems on the Camaro.

Because that would only disable the auto headlights. I wanted to kill the DRLs and the auto headlights. Pulling the light sensor won't do that.

Yup, just use Ttaps for the headlight sensor. Just make sure you strip enough of the wire insulation off or else the heat will mess with the insulation and the car will demod itself

I just stuck a Reisistor in mine dash to disable the auto headlamps. I have done it on 2 of my past Camaro's and my current SS never had a problem
