Ethanol can be made from almost any plant fiber. If we actually start making from other plant fibers in great quantities instead of mostly corn, then it will be more plentiful and its cost will go down.

the only reason its currently only made from sugar and/or corn is that they are very simple sugars that are easy for them to break down
they could make ethanol from ANY organic material with sugar in it which is pretty much everything
like the entire tree or yard trimmings or compost heaps
the reason they dont do that right now is that it is a much more involved process with all the different types of sugars
at least thats what i have come to understand
ethanol is pretty much an all around better fuel
significantly less emissions with no sulpher dioxide and no CO
much higher octain rating (depending on blend) its anywhere from 100-115
it has the potential to make alot more power esp when on a boosted application
when i move back to dallas i will make my scout E85 with boost and use the E85 to its octain potential
for some odd reason west texas doesnt have any E85 stations

what I wonder is how long before Al Gore makes a movie about the evil republican corporations burning our dwindling finite supply of topsoil and irrigation water in our vehicles which will cause the endo of that world. Speaking of which, check this out...

E85 has the estimated octain of 105 depending on ur area. there is a certain percentage of ethanol to gas mixture that makes up e85. its eaither a 70%30 mixture or 80%20 of ethanol and 85 octail gasoline

E = Ethanol
85 = 85% Ethanol
The other 15% is Gasoline
E85 = 85% Ethanol, 15% Gasoline.

Out of the 170,000 filling stations nationwide, only 700 or so stations carry E85, and that is caused by different factors. The major corps. that own these fueling stations are refusing to sell E85 and to meet the high demand of E85 needs farmers would have to dedicate around 3/4 of the farmable land in the U.S. to produce enough ethanol, or start importing it from Brazil. There also are not enough refineries yet to keep up with high demand, so add all of these factors up and you can see how the price is going to fluctuate year round. Its not a brand new fuel, but its just now in recent years making its big debut so its going to take some time before the widespread use can be considered "normal and convenient".
