Default Getting a code checked

Had the SES light pop on this morning. Does about any auto parts store check it for free? Car ran fine, but I might try to run somewhere after work to get it checked out.

I got a simple $40 code OBD-ii scanner from Harbor Freight. It reads and clears codes. Nice tool to have in your tool collection.

Went to advanced and i was P0135. 02 (Bank 1 Sensor 1). Got it cleared and it hasn't come back on yet. The car has sat since the first weekend in November so hoping it was just becauce of the gas maybe?

I got the same code when I started running 93 in the car (like it should be, but the person I bought the car off ran 87 often). It would come on every other months, did this maybe 3 times. Went away for a long time, then got a code, got it checked and the O2's needed replacing.

Do NOT replace the O2 sensors for P0135, P0141, P0147, P0155, P0161, P0167. They are all Heater codes thrown by the O2 Sensors. Apparently these codes are thrown due to the voltage drops if your using LT's. Since there is more wiring needed on the O2 extensions, there is voltage "loss" through the wiring. Since the heater using a voltage sense to the ECM it's going to throw those codes.

Have the codes tuned out and deleted from the ECM, that way the SES light won't comes on. You should still pass OBDII inspection.

Good info there, thank you. I eventually will get my car tuned and once I get a few more mods/funds.

No problem. If you've got state inspection coming up and you've "cleared" them by unplugging the battery to clear those heater codes, you will fail OBDII inspection. Clearing the SES light will not solve anything. At that point, the O2 sensors will show "not ready", which is an automatic fail. You've got to have so many "hot" and "cold" starts.

Have them tuned out before attempting state inspection! Just a friendly reminder!

I've lived in 3 different counties the past couple of years and none have required inspection so I should be good until they mandate something, and hopefully I'll have a tune by then!

When you can, get your own code reader. You don't need to spend a lot of money. It will work on any car. Under $80 probably.
