yes, its still recording, it has a 30 second buffer that is constantly recording over itself the main factors in a crash, lateral accerelration, TPS, MPH, other stuff

Yes our cars have it.
No it can not be removed, because the car will not run.
No the police will not read it to issue you a ticket.
Yes it only stores a minute bit of information, mostly recent activity, like prior to a crash.
It has been used by lawyers in crashes were it resulted in fatalities.
In Florida a driver who was DUI was convicted of reckless endangerement when his black box read he was doing almost 100 mph when he crashed and killed two teenage girls.
Wouldn't you think that DUI was enough to get this guy into jail??

If you aren't doing anything wrong then you don't have anything to worry about.

the actual engine computer records this? If so you can just go to a stand-alone like a bs3

actually the "black box" is the sensing and diagnostic module for the air bag system. it is usually under the center console or passenger side seat.

Does anyone have a definite answer?

If your right, the misinformation needs to be pulled off the site.

Either way, it wouldn't bother me whether or not I have a black box. Doesn't really matter either way.

If a moderator sees this, and this fella is right, it would probably be helpful to change the sticky information.

Right away I can tell the republicans from the people that actually have a clue. I'm surprised this is becoming an issue as of recent. I would think Bush thought this scheme up, he's all for spying on Americans.

It has no relevance to the subject, whether or not it monitors you, but the fact that technology will advance to the extent as mentioned in the above article. All they have to do is serialize their program with your license plate number and anytime it's recorded doing over the speed limit based upon location, they'll end up mailing you a ticket. What a clever way to develop revenue for new programs.

They already do that with cameras on traffic lights.

Well, most speeding occurs on the highway. Just another way for him to get you.

This is the same reason why if you've been doing any hard driving prior to breaking your car, you need to disconnect the negative battery lead before bringing it in for any warranty work.

Nice try, but it's been that way before the Bush Administration. '99 F-bodies have this "black box" and that was before Bush took office.

I guarantee you that by the time this gets implemented (that is, IF it ever does), you'll be so old you'll be driving 10 under the speed limit anyway.

Even if it did happen, it wouldn't give you a ticket if you happen to creep 1 or 2 over. You have to speed up to pass people. It'd most likely be 10-20 over would give you a ticket, or something to that effect.

ok well since this thread went south I'd like to know these things...

Where is the black box?

Which years did it come on?

Where does it pull the info that it records? Directly from the PCM?

Why did someone say the car won't crank without it? Stock PCM diagnoses it on start-up? If so can it be tuned out in a tuning program? (HP Tuners, EFILive etc.)

I already know if the stock engine computer is removed that the airbags still work so what effect does it have on airbags if any.?.?.?

What does it record?

What company maufactures it?

Does anyone have a wiring schematic for it?

Oh Yeah and can someone please tell me where this sticky is about this subject.

Would it be possible to remove the black box and still keep the air bags?
