What was here? (something missing from engine bay)

What was here? (something missing from engine bay) Allright, I've had my car for 3 years now, and about two years ago I noticed that it looked like something used to be attached in the engine bay, and the previous owner yanked it out. Whatever was in there, it was glued down, because when they went to take it out, the bottom stuck on as you can see. I'm talking about the black plastic piece if you can't see it in the pics. I've procrastinated about posting this for two years, but does anybody have a guess as to what was there at some point?
