High octane at the track???

I don't know if there is any amount of tuning that would allow a stock LS1 to take advantage of very high octane fuel. To some extent, the engine tunes itself; the PCM will advance the timing until it detects knock, then keep it just below the threshold where knock occurs. I don't know if it could actually get more advance with higher octane unless the engine had been modified in some way that increased compression (different heads for example). How the PCM controls advance and retard is something I don't know that much about, I'd like to find a good source of info on how this process works.
