back in May, I was foolishly thinking about trading my 2002 Camaro SS with 5800 miles on the odometer and my 2000 Grand Am GT with 85k on the odometer for a brand new 2007 Impala SS since i'll be getting married soon. The dealership offered me $23,500 for it.......no joke.

Needless to say, my dad yelled at me for even thinking about doing that..........she's still sitting pretty in my garage. I dont know what i was thinking.

The point is, there was a herd of salesmen around my car that day at the dealership and you could see them drooling over how much they would be able to turn around and sell it for. The thought of it made my manhood shrivle up.

That seems like a good price considering the dealer mark up. I paid 25K for my 02 SS with only 3K miles on it back in 04.

Glad to hear you were able to keep the car. Low milers are getting rare. Once in a while I get it in my head that I should sell my '98 Z28, but with only 14,400 perfect weather miles, it'd be a damn hard car to replace when I decide I want another one.

i ordered the car back in January 2002 and i had the title in my hand since September '05, so, there weren't any negatives to keeping it.

I'm glad I did though. Dont know what I would do without that car. The fiance on the other hand...........i think she would like me to get something new and more "practical".......what does that word mean anyways?

LOL.... Luckily, my wife is OK with the hobby. In addition to the Camaro, we also have some cars that I think would fall into that "practical" catigory; an '04 Cavalier, an '02 Monte Carlo, and a '96 Bonneville. Even with 4 cars I want more.... I'm thinking about getting another higher mileage Z28 that I would drive regularly, unlike my garage queen.

I would look for a vette for something in that range of money IMO.

A low mileage 02 SS or WS6 will easily pull low 20's. People will pay it. There was a silver 02 WS6 next to my car with 11,000 miles for the same price at the dealership. I had to have the SOM though.

They always have wiggle room in their prices.

You probably do the same thing when selling items...you wouldn't start with your absolute lowest price you will take for something, that's just plain retarded.

Bottom line is, asking others what they think is a fair deal really doesn't help you. If the car is what you want and in your price range, go for it. I could browse the net all day and find cars that you can buy for "a great deal" but if if doesn't interest you, why buy it?

True they have to make money but they dont need to rip people off, your suggestion of giving 20k for a TA and selling it for 20k is not really a good one.....reality of it is more like give customer A 12k for his TA and try to sell it for around 22k......10k profit is ridiculous. They rip people off period. I would bet this guy didnt get more than 12-13k for his SS and now they are asking almost $25,000 for it......that's why they are called stealerships....bottom line is yes they have to do business but they dont need to screw people

Dealer bought my brothers Camaro for $17,000. Put it on sale for $22,500. I think the car is at a fair dealer price, but you could do better in the private market. But it is a car in excellent condition and a lot of people will pay just for that.

I'm not trying to play dealer's advocate here, but the ONLY way a dealer can "screw you" is if you're dumb enough to LET them do it. Most dealers that I know of around here have around a 3-5K mark-up in their used cars...its such a big market, they can't advertise stupid prices, because chances are that someone else has something similar that is willing to move on it.

Do your homework BEFORE you get to the dealership, and realize that two things are happening....you are trying to steal their car and they wouldn't mind stealing yours either. Both are trying to find a happy medium. You will hardly ever make money on a car or even get what you have in it back out...the bottom line is: YOU BOUGHT A DEPRECIATING ITEM AND MARKETS CHANGE CONSTANTLY!

^^^ This is good information, do your homework. But it is also true that they can ALL do business without trying to screw you over.

We tend to throw around the term 'screwed over' a lot. But it is easier to get legal recourse out of a dealer than a private seller who may disappear after you take posession of the car. The short and the end of it is, if you get an LS1 car in excellent condition for low-mid $20s, I think you're getting a decent deal, or at least a good reliable car.

It beats paying $16,000 from a private seller, finding out the engine has serious damage and the seller is claiming he didn't know ****. You just lost $7000 on an engine. That's getting screwed.

Most dealers will not offer a warranty on used cars even though its low mileage. And those extra warranties are expensive, as well as they are usually a hassle to get a claim. And you also have to consider the financing part as most people have to finance because they do not have the cash to put up for a car. A bank won't loan you 20K on a 14K car. Plus paying 2K for an extended warranty etc.. etc... So I still believe them charging you 5-6K over what they paid for it is... screwing you over.

I agree about the warranty. Even if you pay most dealers weasel out of it. But if you have to go to court you're more likely to get money back from a dealer than a private seller. Dealers can't run, and they actually have the money or they can fix the problem. Private sellers tend to be more difficult to get money out of.

That's true but all you gotta do is ask a private seller to take it to a reputable shop and have it gone over... thats what I do with my cars. I'll never buy a used car from a dealership. I test drove a 96 cobra at a local ford dealer a while back... car had 20K miles on it... Clutch was shot, brakes were shot, engine idled really rough... they were asking 8K over trade in value for it.

I think its a high end fair dealer asking price, but worth about 22.5K. I paid 22k for mine with 15k on the clock in 05, the same dealer offered me 22k last month and I have 25k on the clock now...LOL, I was Vette hunting but really just looking. I think most people on here have a weird way of looking at the prices on their cars....most people on here for example, would never sell their car for less than 20k but at the same time would never pay more than 17k......sometimes it dont make sense.

Offer them 20k, work your way up to 22k, leave them your number and walk away....you will probably get a call the next day
