Default Lost Keys?

I did a little search, but just to clarify. I lost my keys. Can the dealer cut me a new ignition and door key just from my vin number?

thanks,
Will

You may have to show registration first just in case. Some dealerships require that so they aren't cutting keys for a theif.

They will cut one from the vin but you will need to show them a registration in your name.

The vin will identify which pellet this will need to put on the key. I think there are 15 different values. If not try and look for a different dealer.

Not always true. We had to get a new ig key made for a vette we had in the shop, we gave the dealer the vin and all but they had to have me measure the resistor with my multi meter so they would know the correct pellet to use.

Measure the resistance and buy the blanks on ebay. It'll save you some cash.

Excuse the spelling or wording because I used my in-laws device to do it, but use a voltimeter ?to read the resistance (in ohms) across that peg/pellet. From there, you will know what blank to buy. You will still need to get a key cut from the dealer but the blanks on ebay cost around $5 a piece. And they are GM blanks.

If the dealer only charges $10 for a blank, or if you need the key pronto, then I would personally just go to the dealer. On the other hand...
