So I'm looking at possibly buying an older C5 with some miles and putting some mods onto it. I'd want the vette to be at least as fast as my Cobra in the quarter, while maintaining good driveability (the cobra drives like stock).

From browsing around it seems like I would have to do at least Heads/Cam and all supporting mods on the 'vette, and depending on how aggressive I get I could have between 450-480 at the wheels - which would be plenty to take the cobra considering the C5's weight advantage.

So is it feasible to buy a C5 at around 13-15k, add the mods needed to keep up with the Cobra and stay under or around $20k? $23k would be the max I would want to spend total.

Thanks,
Zach
Why not look into a C5 Z06? Bone stock they will run low 12s, it wouldnt take much to get into the 11s from there. You could probably get one for around 25K.
And FYI, if you want a good handling car do NOT put drag suspension on it.

They're 10K over what regular older C5's are going for. Cheaper to get the regular and spend 1500 into it and destroy a Z06

I think you can do it fairly easy without the use of N2O. decent heads ported ls6's are great bang for the buck, good sized cam, headers and supporting bolt ons, maybe a clutch and flywheel to

He said he wants more than strait line speed.
A C5 Z06 handles significantly better than a normal C5, or even a Z51.

You could buy the Z06 components and slap them on a regular C5 as well.

I think it has been established that it is a possibility. Now post up some pics of what you build. Good luck with the project!

You should be able to get the c5 in the 11's for sure with a cam, and bolt on's. So as long as you find a c5 around your 15k price range you should be ok....

But what about finding an fbody for 10k and going 10's? Lol,Good luck int he search.

If I decide to pull the trigger then I'm sure I'll be on here a lot posting questions

Well the other possibility is a Whipple and suspension work for my '03 Cobra, so 10s would be on the table then too. I kinda like the idea of a modded vette though for some reason

Looks great! What kind of car did you have before and how do you like the Vette?

a buddy has a '03 cobra with i believe 2.8 whipple and hes puttin down around 600rwhp w/o his 150shot, and he ran 11.31 at 128 (w/o spray) on 18's with DR at the track a couple weeks ago. the car is pretty nasty for a street car. he still has some traction issues though

I think you could. It may be a higher mileage C5, but who really cares if you're going to tear it apart anyway.

I love the Vette. I have had 11 f-bodies over the years. I sold my 01 SS to the Vette. I still have my 98 Trans Am also

Sorry to bring this thread back from the dead but I figured someone might want to see this ad:

I'm not in the position to buy right this second but that looks like a good solid project car!

I'm with everyone else on getting a z06. They're constantly going down in price and around 6 mo to a year ago, a buddy and I were looking for one. You could find them in great condition and decent mileage if you looked for around 19-22k. Have a port job done and upgrade the internals of the heads. Then grab you some lt headers, exhaust, and intake. Finally grab a small cam to take advantage of the mods and have it tuned. At that point, you're a pair of drag radials from being SOLIDLY into the 11's. The thing is with this game plan, you really don't have to do anything right off the bat to have a fast car. There is a stock c5 zo6 running falken azenis tires KILLING other peoples times on the autocross course where I live. You really can't beat the zo6's in the handling performance from factory for the money. You really seam to be looking for a car that feels and has the capability of a 11 sec car. You really don't act like you car if you have the timeslips to back it up. So if you're looking for an extremely fun car to drive that feels just as fast if not faster than your cobra, then get a zo6.

You might want to think about spending your whole budget (~23k) upfront and buying a C5 that’s already modified. Mods don’t really add any value (for the seller) to the price of a used C5. My C5 has 34k miles is like new in and out. It has many mods and runs 11.80’s @ 124 on the original (no traction!) tires and it’s not worth much more than you’re looking to spend.

You should be able to find a C5 that’s already done that suits your needs for the price you want to pay.
