lol.....another 6spd vs auto thread I see! Each to his own, I mean each has to suit the driver, the drivers conditions(stop and go, weather, etc), and the type of driving done(auto-x, drag, street, etc)........choose wisely, I do various types of driving....which includes driving in stop and go for up to 2 hrs at any point(driving to the cotage/dowtown toronto) and its not bad to do it in a manual...in the very least, I figure its better to put up with that now and then, than to drive an auto all the time.....once again each to his own.
Also as stated a million times, an LS1 is an LS1 is an LS1.....save some $green$ and go with the 99, sounds like a great car. The differences in each yr LS1 kind of compensates to make all yrs engines about the same in output(bigger cams/injectors/heads etc......)

wut i like over the 01^s are the steering wheel,ls6 intake, slightly bigger injectors, clutch, and whatever was revised with the clutch over previous years. Which all these things are little things. I just want to get a clean, unmolested car which is kind of hard these days.Ok new question would you guys get a 01^ z28 (auto) with low miles over the ss because im finding a couple of them for the same price.Im going to call this guy up later today.I really need a car so i might just end up getting it if i can get the price down a little.

I always thought "I want an 01/02" car...then finally one day last summer I said "I need better gas mileage, if I find AN LS1 car with a T56, that is Pewter, Black or SOM, I will trade my truck (2002 2500HD that I LOVED) for it."
I went out and found my car, it's a 2000 and it's Pewter, and it has a T56...I've driven every year and I like driving every one of them. I'm not sure what you mean about the steering wheel though, I know my 2000 has the same wheel with radio controls that 01/02's have...my 2000 even has 241 heads from the factory. Regardless of that, I've run dead even with 02's, 98's...you get the picture.
Do I regret not getting an 01/02? I paid about $4,000 less than any comparable 01/02 I could find so there's nothing to regret there...I found an LS6 intake on ebay thats in perfect condition for $250 (haven't installed it yet...but thats just because I drive the car 650 miles a week for work and I just haven't had time yet). The car is clean, it's the trans/color I wanted, it runs perfect, all I really regret is that I didn't buy it a year earlier (when I got the truck) because I'd have more money from the gas I don't burn anymore (got 13 mpg in the truck and I hit 30+ all the time on the highway in the Camaro) that I could have put into more mods by now.

It's an opinion thing really. I've owned Camaros with both, I kinda like the older wheel better just because it's a tad bit smaller, and I'm not too fond of radio controls on the wheel.

99-02 all had 853 heads only the 98 had 241! stock for stock an 01 or 02 camaro vs a 99 camaro (with ls6 intake) the 99 will win because of the bigger cam! all the other differances are no big deal and can be changed. goodluck and that is a sweet ss i hope u buy it, dont pass a good deal lik that!

whoa!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! back the uninformed truck up, alright buddy let me set you straight here, 98 had 806's and 853's, 853's continued through 99 and 00, in late 00 model year the 241 was introduced and was used throughout 01 and 02, as far as cams go.......

I hope this post will help others decide. Im pretty sure that i would buy 99^ ss as long as i like everything about it and most of all a clean unmolested car.

Between my wife and I, we have owned every year of LS1 Camaro. In fact, the only year we no longer have is '00. I can say that your really should not get overly concerned about a particular model year. Get the color, trans, and options you want. The performance differences between the years are pretty negligible and you can modify the car to get any parts you feel you lack. Yeah, the '01 and up hydraulics are better, the LS6 intake is better, etc. but those are pretty easy fixes. My '99 has a new slave and master and it will soon have an LS6 intake and 28.8 injectors and a fresh PCM tune and then I'll be all set.
The only concern I would really have about a '98 is the PCM. However, our '98 is my wife's vert and we are not planning any major mods that would make extensive PCM tuning necessary.

How about an auto in a muscle car? You know a 3500 pound car with back seats, loud exhaust and a lot of attitude
Autos with 3500-4400 stalls make great weekend warriors, strip monsters, daily drivers and yes even drag queens.
And if the purpose you speak of is less stress on the 10 bolt, better launches, perfect shifts and consistently winning drag races then yes the auto does defeat all of the above quite effectively.
But hey, stalled autos are not for everyone. Some people need to feel a stick in thier hands and a clutch at thier feet. Not that there's anything wrong with that

Unsure
I have talk with Thunder Racing and Speed Inc and a few others but still no for sure answer. I have a 2002 SS with a T-REX cam, with factory heads. Can Patriot Stage 2 heads work without fly cutting the pistons?????????

853 heads were from '99- most of '00.
Some very late '00 cars got 241 heads.
All '01-02 had 241.

Only other reason to want an 01/02 that I can see is that they come without EGR...which is easy enough to delete from a 98-2000...but the emissions inspector might not be too happy about that (if they notice).
I had no idea the earlier cars had the same wheel as the LT1 cars...I never liked that wheel myself, and I LOVE the radio controls on my wheel...I have them talking to my Kenwood head unit...which is awesome because that lets me program them to do whatever I want them to do.
Again though, I still say, look for the color and trans you want as well as the package you want...ie if you want an SS, don't settle for a Z28, if you want a WS6, don't settle for a regular bird...I personally didn't want an SS (I drive a LOT of miles every week and I didn't want to do that to the odometer on an SS) so my car was a great find for me, and it's easy enough to do some intake/exhaust/suspension mods to get that little bit of performance back anyways...the air lid and scoop thing (the SLP thing that comes down in front of the AC condensor to get air that hasn't been warmed up in the engine bay yet) alone has been a pretty decent bump in performance.

I have owned
2001 SS M6
1998 Trans Am A4
1999 B4C A4
1999 Z28 M6
2000 Formula M6 -present
Also don't forget the LS6 clutch and LS6 oil pump on the 01-02 cars! I can say from my experience I would get a 01-02 car but the car your looking at seems like a good deal! Also people on here rag on 98's. My 98 had 147,564 on it when i sold it 2 days ago and it ran like a champ. Good Luck with your car

Yes ive owned an 98 stripper a4 and it was awesome. I could pull on a geared 99 cobra, keep up with a modded lightning which both had faster Ets than me. also stayed next to a viper for like 2 seconds then i left off wish i stayed on it lol.(confirmed on forza)But from what i know now i want to make sure i get the right car.Money is a factor however if i had the money I would pay anything for what i wanted.
