Default hatch / trunk wont open with key

i cant seem to get my hatch open with my door key. the door key opens both my doors, glove compartment, and t-tops fine, but it wont work on the hatch. any suggestions on what it could be? i plan on spraying the beeotch with wd-40 tomorrow morning, hopefully that cures it

the key fob opens it and the inside hatch release opens it. im just afraid that if the battery dies, i wont be able to access the tools i have in the trunk area

Is it cold and the hatch is frozen shut? I've had plenty of trunks freeze on me before.

ttt.

is there a way you can release the hatch in an emergency? like a cable that runs through the sail panel?

the problem with oils or grease is it attracts dirt and dries out leaving the lock a mess that does not work.
powdered graphite is a great lock lube that does not cause these problems.
most times i have to put it in several times and really work the lock, almost always when it breaks free it works like a new lock.

WAIT----is there anything stuck on/in the inside lock..a blanket/towel/fabric of some sort.?? I closed mine on a bit of a blanket I had back there..it would not open...crawled back to look/see...pulled like hell until it ripped apart..no problem. [never know].

i dont know. i think it got stuck because i never really used the key; i always used the interior release button or the key fob. then one day i was like "hmm let me try the key" and it didnt work. i would have been screwed if my car broke down in the middle of know where and i couldnt reach my tools because the battery was dead. but who cares now, its fixed

Common problem on 98's. It will happen again. They made a change in design after 98 and it is not as common.
