Default How can this be?

One of my buddies with a bolt on M6 Z28 that runs 13 flat gave me a ride in his car one day and for some reason it felt a lot faster than my H/C stalled auto that runs 11.9s. How in the hell can this be?

Ok then. I thought I was going nuts or something. I was thinking how in the hell can a car that is a full second slower then me feel faster. Is it because of the instant throtle responce?

I would say it's also because you're a passenger in the car that it "feels" faster.

If you still have your 3.23 gears, that could be the difference. The M6 cars for the most part have 3.40s unless they were ordered with something else. One thing I've noticed on the chassis dyno is how much more hp manual cars make than the autos. My friend's 3.23 geared auto LS1 SS put 310 on the dyno, then my other buddy's manual LS1 Z28 put 340 down on the dyno, and they were both mechanically similar cars concerning the engine.

I still have the factory 3.23 but I would think my 3600 stall would make up for that. I thought M6s only came with 3.42s? I have seen stalled autos out run manuals with much higher dyno numbers.

You're the passenger, you get thrown back more because you don't have a steering wheel to hold on to and you don't know its coming.

Hmmm... maybe I should get somone I trust to drive my car while I am in the passenger seat. I know my car is faster than his, I have ran him before and I kill him. It was just weird then he gave me a ride and it felt faster than mine.

It feels faster because you are not in control. In your head basically, as a passenger cars always feel faster. The m6 tends to distort this further by giving you solid knock backs into your seat.

An auto simply has lower numbers due to the auto robbing more power than a m6 in power lost through drivetrain efficiency.

If you take equivalent cars with the same engine, both should run the same, but the m6 will dyno higher. The secret to the auto is in the stall and speed in which it shifts at. It'll launch better and shift faster. The m6 will make better use of its power BUT has the difficulty of launching with a clutch (with a fragile rear end no less) and time lost from shifting.

I did not take a stall into account when I wrote that, and yes, you are right, they are 3.42s not 3.40s. The option to purchase steeper gears was available from the dealer, the specifics I am not knowledgeable of though. Yes again, dyno sessions and track time are two different things.

Between the M6 and you being in the passengers seat it probably did feel faster. The ripping through gears makes a car feel faster where as an A4 is smoother and therefore you not as able to notice how hard it's pulling. Also, in my experience being in the passengers seat of even your own car makes it seem faster. Not really sure why that is though

It is because when you are driving you have complete control of the acceleration and are able to adapt on what will happen. Alot of people lean forward slightly. The passenger seat is also in a different position.
