20mph go into 2nd
30 into 3rd
40mph go into 4th
50mph go into 5th
60mph + = 6th gear

If your just cruising, id cruise at 1500 rpms..no more than 1800

Lugging doesn't hurt motors. It is just bad form and you can't get out of the way as fast in an emergency.

The less RPM, the less cyles/second ---> less fuel consumed.

From about 4000 to 6000 on your motor the cylinder don't get filled as much but since the motor is moving faster you still consume more fuel. Even if you get 100% fill at 4000 and 70 % fill at 6000. You still use more fuel.

Shift early if you are concerned about fuel mileage. Otherwise who cares.

I've been in sixth at around 25-30 if I recall correctly...about 850rpm whatever speed I was going. You could start in 4th if you wanted to, but personally I've never done 1st to 5th, but it's not far off from the factory skipshift 1st to 4th and thats not revving 1st at all. So if you revved a little more in 1st, no I don't see any damage. Boring yes, damaging no.

I go into 6th at about 35 MPH but stay it in as low as about 25 MPH. Even with my gears I won't do a 1-5 though. (2.66*4.56=12 and 0.74*4.56=3.37).

It isn't really damage to the motor to start out in another gear. But if you have to slip the clutch alot then it is wear on the clutch.

I usually do 1 3 5 6 or 1 4 6 depending on traffic. If I think some jackass is going to do something I try to keep about 2000 until there is no danger so 1 2 3 4 5 6

I hate starting out in second with traffic because you have to get moving too fast only to slam on the brakes again.

Just all depends on traffic.

I think when casually going through traffic the motor will spin up too high and for too long to be worth the 1-5 as compared to the 1-4. I think the factory had a reason they picked that. Just takes too long to get that extra MPH doing to do that.

Deceleration Fuel Cut Off.

Basically you have a couple of requirements.

RPM Window
Mani Vac Window
Time since last DFCO
Vehicle speed window.
Vehicle spark timing: has it been lowered enough yet?
Engine coolant.

If the vehicle meets the requirements it cuts fuel to a very small amount. About 1/6 of what it takes to idle for the purposes of engine braking and saving fuel.

Some people say it cuts the fuel completely but I am pretty sure the PCM is hardcoded to spray a certain MIN INJECTOR PULSE when the PCM is in sequential fuel injection mode.

Yeah I thought to mention that after I posted, but you don't need to slip it much at all, though that doesn't mean everybody wont.

BTW, for the record, I really don't skip many shifts or try to get good mileage at all to get my usual 21-22 mpg, though sometimes I will go 1-3 or onto the highway 3-6 or 4-6, or I'll let the cags go 1-4, no big deal because I was going slow anyway. Usually around town I'm revving 2-3k in 1st or 2nd gear because I like the sound, and rolling on the throttle in 1st and/or light powershifting second for some tirespin fun, so for good mileage do as I say not as I do

None of the above suggestions worked for me. It just seems some ls1s get funny car mileage like mine or some get high gas mileage with high horsepower. Im a bolton car with a tune and touched 9mpg AND THATS WITH skipping gears, and granny low rpm driving!

I'm guessing you have an auto, and maybe with a high stall? On another note, I've noticed people claiming high mpg tend to have upgraded heads. Any ideas on mpg increase for better heads and/or any other mods that might significantly improve mpg? Anybody notice significant mpg upgrade with a heads upgrade? Maybe it would pay for itself over the life of the car. Of course probably take the savings back on drivetrain wear though due to more hp. How about a mild or agressive cam upgrade, better or worse mpg?

Could be because with most race mods the engine will flow less at low RPM.

My car got better fuel milage until I put gears in it. But, the mods cost a lot and it would take a while for you to ever come out better from the fuel you saved.

I shift mine at 2k all day long and will skip shift to 4th some times. Or I go like 1-3-5. But I average anywere between 22-25 more on the 22 side. Mods in sig. Thats also with the stock 3.42 gear.

It's funny [ Well not really ] how some peoples setups get good MPGs and others with similar setups get horrible MPGs
