Think about this.... The General has been building V8 engines for a looooong time. Even when the other brands abandoned the pushrod engines, GM stayed with it.

Through the years, I have built many small block Chevy engines and even some big blocks that I felt were strong performers...... 90% of them don't even compare to the LS1!!

because it explodes and throws rods as soon as you crank it up.

its far from the best engine, but they are responsive to mods and flow pretty good plus the aftermarket is endless

infinite top end, almost as much as a Honda VTEC...

Seriously, it does have a killer top end. Also, I'm getting 30 mpg highway with around +-500hp(it responds really good to mods). Even if I dont give a damn about mpg, its still good. Plus all LS1 cars look great!! All alum, great stock heads and 350hp stock is freaking good! Rwd too..the real modern muscle car

it only blows up because people get their hands on it...

seriously though an engine that does 4 banger mileage while making 350HP (engine) in stock form...

Heck even the derivatives and the later gen models only improve upon it's initial concept. More power and more efficiency. LS7 mileage numbers are just insane and a whole 155HP more...

I drove from MD to FL with me, my wife, and the car packed with luggage (including heavy tools) and got 27mpg. ...that's with cam, bolt-ons, tune, and ~380rwhp.

The LS series in amazing. I remember thinking when they first came out in '97 that this engine was a joke. Afterall it was "only" 346 cubic inches. It had to be junk becasue it wasnt a 350, haha! I've NEVER been dissatisfied with the performance of any of my LSX cars. In fact the powertrains are so good that it makes me want to mod the hell out of them to unlock that much more of the hidden potential!

As far as mileage these these vehicles are amazing. My '01 SS got 27.8 on the Power Tour last year...not to shabby for a car with 410 rwhp. My '99 SS still gets 21 on the highway..again not too shabby for a car with 4.10's and a 500+ rwhp NA stroker. The Z06 is in the upper 20's overall...can't do that in a modular Mustang!

IMO, the LSX series is the best OVERALL V8's every built. Tough, light, versatile...

On that note, they are just ANY OTHER ENGINE out there. You treat them well, they will treat you well. You neglect them, they will neglect you. It will last as long as you take care of it.

1. flows air like no other! heads are a great design
2. durable-you can rag on them as hard as you want every day and they go over a 100k miles with no problem.
3. great gas mileage
4. light weight
5. comes with awsome HP right out of the factory
6. easy to build more hp
7. fuel injected
8. very reliable
their are about a million more reasons why the LS motors are so great but these are just a few to give you an example. the best motor design ever produced by far.

IMO ...

Things that makes the LSX motors so great ...

1.) Single cam and pushrod simplicity.

2.) Lots of power and torque.

3.) Decent fuel mileage.

4.) Parts interchangablilty.

5.) Lots of OEM and aftermarket parts.

6.) Fairly easy to wrench on.

7.) Proven reliablilty. Many high mileage motors still running.

8.) Flex Fuel availablity for the 5.3L Chevy Silverado trucks.

9.) Designed by GM... An american car company. I'm very patriotic.
I wish they were built here. I like the Kanooks, so being built in
Canada isn't so bad.

Happy Memorial day all.

im gonna have to disagree here,
ls6 intake one of the best flowing intake manifolds of all time used on gm sb motor or anything else for that matter.
no heat soak, easy to remove and replace, no coolant or oil run through

now if your talking about a lt1 intake manifoldplease
worst gm engine err... i mean intake

i once heard about some list that was made that rated the best engines ever made. somebody told me that ls1 wasnt even in the top ten, and i know the list was fairly new. i have no idea why and in no way agree with it, but i wanted to see if anybody had heard about this list too.

what made me so mad was that fords modular v8 was top three, and i know i heard about it on this site too.

That's what I used to think. Now I wouldn't want anything else.

The main reason for not being considered a great engine is because
pushrod, single cam motors are actually considered obsolete.

Gm received alot of criticism in that regard.

The materials and engineering that went into the LSX is actually very high tech.

The strange thing is that basic DOHC motors have been around for a long time.

You can see many different old configurations here.
http://www.museumofamericanspeed.com...LLThumbs.shtml

What about the old ZR1 Vette with the LT5, 32 valve DOHC.
That's an expensive motor to build, maintain and upgrade.

With that said, it has been rumored that GM may have
another multi-valve DOHC V8 in thier future pipeline.

LS1 pwns
Im not trying to diss on the ls1 at all but, 1st of all the 5.9 liter with a 198hp is just plain bad engine, idk how you make 200hp from a 5.9 liter, 2nd of all i think the ls1 could have obviously been much better b/c look at the m3's, straight 6 3.2 liter puts down 340hp..... once again not trying to diss on the ls1 but obviously could have technically been much better, oh and the new m3's 4 liter v8 which putts out 412hp...... just saying

Them be fighting words.

What are you basing that on? How about modding ability or available torque? Unless you go forced induction a V6 motors power is always going to be limited.
