Checking rearend fluid

Checking rearend fliud question. I took out the fill plug and stuck my pinky in there to check the fluid. Should the fluid be all the way up to the hole. I didn't feel any except for whats coating the side of the housing. If this is low what fluid do I top it off with . I can't remember whats in it now so would it hurt to mix the fluid with another? Thanks in advance.
Re: Checking rearend fliud question. How many miles on your car? It probably wounldn't hurt to pull the cover and change the fluid, then you wouldn't have to worry about mixing.
Re: Checking rearend fliud question. I agree, just change the fliud, cost you $15-$20. I always put 2 quarts in mine, which makes it a little higher that the fill plug, so I put my thumb over the hole to keep the extra fuild in, then quickly put the plug in. Couldn't hurt...
