Interesting: Electrical/Check Gages
Car is a 1998 M6 TA. I have had this happen once, and I knew the cause.
I started the car tonight (after a good day's rain) to drive to work. The car had not been driven in 36 hours, had not moved since about 12 hours before rain. I immediately notices a squeal. It sounded somewhere between a wet/slipping belt, and a bad waterpump bearing. It quit almost immediately, but the Check Gages light came on, and the alternator voltage was reading in the 16-18 range. I got a little bit of flicker on the lights. I stopped the car and checked the belts for a wet spot and visually eyed the alternator, could not see any misalignment or other issues.
I started the car back up with the hood up and it was all good. I was a little spooked, but I drove it to the house and took the Jeep to work.
I cranked it tonight, and it was just fine, again.
So. The only time I've seen this before I drove 5MPH through a puddle on a corner, and got water splashed under the hood on the ALT. After it dried for a few hours I had no more troubles.
Here's the thing: The car did not move in the rain, and was parked on a nearly flat space. I do not see any possible way for it to have gotten wet this time.
I'm scratching my head here, but I would assume I had some moisture interfering with the regulator. Any ideas?
