Default Getting Rid of Rust

I took out my whole interior + carpet in preperation to apply sound deadening, and underneath the driver's seat under the carpet there is some surface rust. Whats the best way to remove it. Also, the car is daily driven all year and already this year I have driven through snow, one of these days i plan to get the car up and check the underbody for rust. What's the best way to take rust off of the underbody and to rustproof it for the future.

attached is a picture of the surface rust under the driver's seat.

A really good idea that I have been thinking of instead of grinding or replacing the metal. As long as you can't put a screwdriver though it or somethng is buying rustlock or something along those lines. Rustlock is a solution that chemically turns rust into primer. They sell it in most marine or boat stores of sorts.

I just tried searching it but didn't find much. Call up a automotive paint supplier. They will know what it is for sure if not a boat shop. I used it on the boat I was stationed on. Stuff is awesome and came out like a medium grey in color, but won't be able to see it anyway under the carpet. It will stop the rust and get rid of it too. It is pretty nasty stuff though, make sure you don't get any on ya

"POR-15® is a high-tech, high performance rust-preventive coating designed for application directly on rusted or seasoned metal surfaces. It dries to an incredible rock-hard, non-porous finish that won't chip, crack, or peel, and it prevents rust from recurring by protecting metal from further exposure to moisture.

Use it to coat rusty frames, floor pans, farm equipment, marine equipment, or even a heavily corroded battery tray.

POR-15® is sensitive to UV light (sun) and must be topcoated for prolonged exposure to sunlight.
Topcoating is not required for areas not exposed to sunlight."

Try sanding it out. The only way to properly remove all rust.

What kind of grit sand paper would you recommend.

Use a wire wheel attachment on an electric or pneumatic tool. Coat with paint of your choice.

Why POR15 the inside of a vehicle? Doesn't make sense.

Any rattle can will stop the rust in that location. You just need to recover it with paint and you will be fine.

Because the POR15 becomes primer itself and ready to paint when it dries. Doesn't take it very long. After using it, I think it is some really good stuff. For interior and as well as exterior.

I've had very good results from it as well, I was skeptical at first but it worked much better than I expected.
My damn GM battery did the + terminal ****-off all around the battery area-after I got all the acid off I used the POR and repainted-been over two years and its virtually impossible to see where any damage occured.

Ahhh thats nothing to worry about. If you really wanna see rust come check out my jeep! Just use sand paper or a paint/rust remover disc for a power drill (really quick and easy) and spray a coat of primer over it. The POR15 is nice if you dont wanna bother sanding it. Just paint it on and let it dry.

I agree its not the cheapest, but you get what you pay for. Covers easily w/sealer or primer.

I would hit it with a wire wheel, then spray it with some silver rattle can paint. I say silver just becuase I want everything to match. . . .
