Hey, Not sure if this is normal or not. Considering the ls1 is a very noisy engine.
Bassicly once the car gets warmed up even a little bit, i can rev it to 2000 rpm then let it fall and around 1000 rpm i can hear lifter clatter. And at light throttle too.
By about 2 grand it gos away. Oil is full, 45 pnds at idle.
Its got royal purple 5-30. Delco pf 46.
53,000 miles.
I was thinking maybe adding some lucas next oil change.
Or that it has to do with that TSB about the cut oil pump o-ring.
Let me know some thoughts, thanks!

actually royal purple is terrible oil for our cars. If you went back with a regular oil, not synthetic you would be alot happier. I have seen a engine that royal purple had been run in and it was not pretty! just FYI

There are 100's of threads about this if you want to search and read more about it.
I bought my car at 22,000 miles. At 25,000 I did an oil change with 5w30 Mobil one and a Delco filter.
After that I noticed the noise.
Took it in, the supposedly checked the oil pick up o-ring by installing a mechanical gauge. They ended up replacing all the lifters under warranty.
I didn't pay attention or whatever but a week later I noticed the noise was back.
I took it back in.
Now at this point the service rep says the noise is normal.
And I'm not talking about a quiet, can you hear that kind of noise either. It's more like when I pull into the service area, heads turn.
I know they took the heads off because it had new gaskets, I'd assume they changed the lifters. Now the guy was telling me it's normal after they went through all this.![Bulls#!t](https://ls1tech.com/forums/images/smilies/LS1Tech/gr_bs.gif)
After this I took it to a few other dealers, most acted like I was asking for a new car when I was only asking if they could fix this noise. Real ********.
It's got 52,000 on it now, the noise never changed. I've run it hard enough.
I guess the definition of normal is something that cannot be changed, who knows.
And it's not piston slap as many people will try to tell you. One of my cars has that and it goes away when it warms up. This valvetrain noise never goes away.

Why is royal purple terrible for ls-1's?
And i know synthetics are thinner then there conventional counter part causing noise, But i wouldn't figure this drastic?
I mean is it like royal purple will cause damage? or Can i wait until the next oil change to switch it up.
Thanks again!

i took the valve covers off of a car that we were doing a cam on. You could pull the gunk out with your fingers and fill your hands with it!! It was unbelievable! also, if you read oil reviews, royal purple is at the bottom, Mobil 1 being at the top. But out of personal experience, regular pennzoil 10-30 oil seems to quiet mine down a good bit.

Can you direct me to some of these oil reviews? Most everything I read about Royal Purple is positive. The only exception being their stuff isn't good for stock Tremec synchros. (an additive incompatibility, IIRC)

i just purchased my car two months ago and just did a oil change to mobil 1 10w 30 last week and as soon as i got done mine does this exact same thing tick now at about 1200-1500 rpm's you can really hear it when rpm's are dropping! it never did it before! so i drained the oil and put in a 5w40 syn hoping a little thicker oil would quiet it up, but nothing. so i might put in reg ol dino penzoil 10w 30 in and try it? thats what was in it from the previous owner. if you find a cure let me know? and ill do the same

I have a 2000 z28 with 65000 km on it. Clattering valve train noise is loud enough that you are embarrassed driving down the street at about 2500 rpm. It runs fine otherwise. GM tech removed valve cover and checked pushrods and they are ok. He feels no 1 cylinder is where most of the noise is and that we should remove heads and replace lifters and cam for the tune of about $2500 .Checked oil filter and plug and they are fairly clean with a few tiny speckles in filter. I have read that LS1s can be noisy, so not sure if I would be wasting money with replacing lifters and cam at this point. Any advice would be appreciated .

I have the same issue https://ls1tech.com/forums/generatio...tle-clack.html
I'm thinking maybe timing chain slack.
I tried a little STP high mileage oil treatment and it helped a lot. Its a bandaid but better than listening to all that clattering.

Decided to go inside engine. One lifter was bad and destroyed one lobe of the cam . New cam coming , just wondering if I have to replace the remaining lifters with a new cam . The other lifters look ok

I would.... They're not that expensive and you're there anyway. I dont however care for ls7 lifters, different height and I've seen a few fail. I would get just a stock of ls1/6 lifters off ebay, there is a guy on there in florida who makes copys of them. I have used a couple sets and never had an issue. Or if you have a larger cam or have a ;little spare coin get brian tooley lifters, they're worth it.

LS1s make noise from pistons (when cold) and lifters (when warm). Period. Some other things here and there (bent pushrods, broken springs) - but I'd say 90% of engine related noises is one of those two. I've seen cam lobes a few times too, but not on LS1s in particular - usually trucks.
