I changed the plugs, wires, cat, fuel filter, checked pressure on the fuel pump but haven't changed the coils yet. The problem is still there.

I do get a SES light and it stays on if you don't throttle it, as soon as you do then it flashes a couple of times then holds steady again.

I will see if she can take it to AutoZone to see if they will read the codes on it.

I hate trying to chase these things down.

Ok, I had her stop at autozone to find out what codes are being thrown.
Here they are

P0401
P0300
P1406
P1870

If anyone can help me out at this point I would really appreciate it.
I am going to run by the parts store tonight and pick up new coil packs. What else should I try to get??

Thanks for the help.

It's your egr, it's getting blocked. You need to take it off and clean it out, or better yet buy a new one. P0401=Insufficient EGR Flow, P0300=Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected, P1406=EGR Valve Pintle Position Circuit, P1870=Transmission Componet Slippage. So basically you've got a clogged egr which is causing the misfire and is easy/cheap to fix, but you also have a slip in your tranny which is not easy/cheap to fix.

Yeah they are pretty expensive. I'd take the one already on there and clean it real good. See if that helps. I wouldn't wanna pay that much just for the egr valve. I had problems with mine but it never made it run worse. I went and got one from one of the local junkyards and cleaned it and it works fine now.

On a RWD 3800 it is on the driver's side of the motor, connected to the driver's side exhaust manifold by a metal tube that comes off the 1cyl. It is a cylindrical looking deal with some wires coming off it, and a connection back into the intake manifold.

As a last resort, it is possible to tune the EGR codes out with HPT I believe.

Yep the pindle is getting stuck open from the amount of carbon build up. THe best way I found to dealing with this is to go to a dealership and buy some Top Engine Cleaner. Take the EGR of should be two 13mm nut and a 10mm small bolt that attaches the metal tube to the upper plunem. Be careful with the metal tube very brittle. YOu may not have to take the tube off, some due some don't. After you get the EGR off flip it up side down. You should see a torques bit looking screw. That little screw is the pindle that is getting stuck. Find some thing that you push that pin down with, as you are doing that pourt in small amounts of the top engine cleaner. The Top engine cleaner will start to break up the carbon that is making that pin stick. Keep repeating steps till the pin moves freely. After that is done reinstall using a new EGR gasket. Hand tighten and that normally fixs a lot of the 3800 EGR problems. Coil packs are not that expensive. I want to say the AcDelco one were like $50 each and then the MSD ones were $58 needless to say I went MSD. I hope that helps you out a lot.

Well, the parts store only had two coils in stock so I got those and replaced the two back ones (the furthest one back was loose on the mounts if that has anything to do with it). So I thought I would take the EGR off and check it out, I unbolted the thing and when I lifted it up the damn base was broken in two and seems to have been for a while since there was black carbon all thru the broken area, then I went to unplug the wires and the whole damn top was broken and came off in two pieces. Needless to say this might or should be the problem.

Well loose connections can really cause a problem. Then on top of that the base of the EGR is broken. Fix that stuff and see if that will sovle your problem. Yeah I forgot the wireing connection above too. oops
