Reason for vented opti?!

Reason for vented opti?! I've had my 30th Ann. Z for over a year now, and I bought it with a little leak that eventually knocked the opti out. After tearing it down and fixing it, it happened again... I found the source of the problem, but my question is the reasoning behind the vented opti. This may come off as a dumb question, but I never heard a reason for switching to the vented style in '95. And why a non-vented opti won't work on a 1997. Fellow motorheads please help me out! 
It helps keep vapor condensation down, rather than trapping it inside. I had non-vented on my 97, as I couldn't find a vented one in a hurry when I needed it.

The best way to fix it is to fix the leak, usually the water pump. And the best way to fix the water pump is to go electric. It eliminates the rear seal, the most common source of leaks.
