Unhappy Bad gas mileage

Have 98 camaro z 89,000 mi. Fla. car now daily driver in n.j. Just put on road end of Dec. very cold here-drive 10 mi. a day & getting 12 mi./gal. Had car tuned, new everything & tires. Only thing I can figure is always in high idle & flowmaster exhaust pipe does have slight restriction in exit size.

Do you have any bolt-ons aside from the flowmaster? It sounds like your tuner could have set it to run too rich. Or if you have headers and an ory, your tune could be really off. Or it could be a little on the rich side to get the most power.

if most of you're commute is city, stop and go driving you're gonna get pretty shitty mileage anyways. but 12 mpg is pretty low. accelerating fast at intersections will kill your mpg all day. good rule of thumb: try too keep the rpms at or under 2k for dd.

Need more info. By tune do you mean TUNED or tuned-up (plugs, wires, fluids changed, belts, fuel filter, cleaned MAF, O2 sensors changed with your milage, sea foamed etc.)? Anything other than your muffler? Mine was idling high for a while or "fluctuated" due to bad IAC valve. That gave bad gas mileage due to that. Is your foot stomp happy?

I am subscribing to this thead. I am wondering if possibly having too small of injectors could cause the car the tuner to tune the car to run too rich thus causing poor gas mileage?

Having too small of injectors wouldn't cause bad gas mileage.

I realize that, but I am wondering if with too small injectors the tuner would run it too rich to compensate?

Even if you had the stock injectors that came in your car, you are still ok with your power and fuel feeding it. Probably maximizing their capacity. You could always go to 28lbs injectors found on the 01 and newer F-bodies and Y bodies or 32lbers. Having "too small injectors" would only affect your performance.

My gas mileage has also dropped. Only thing that was changed was spark plugs, where I was getting 17+ mpg consistently, and now it's 12-15 mpg. This is all around driving, but mostly city. All I know about my new plugs is that they're AC Delco Platinum Rapid Fire designed for a sedan, but is still "acceptable" for an F-body. They're gapped at .06" whereas the old ones were around .04".

I don't know what to expect with my engine swap. With my old LS1 engine mostly stock except for intake and exhaust, I used to get 13-16 driving around the city and about 26 on the highway. Since I put my new engine in, my best mileage has been 13, but that had some highway mixed in. My city driving is currently getting me 10-12 mpg. I know what people are going to say, that I need to lay off the gas, but even if I do, the best I can get is the 12 when that used to produce 16.

Oh well, the cost of performance I guess.

Same thing here. I think its the bled of gas you get in the winter. I went from getting 18MPG in 100% city driving to my new record low of 14MPG in 100% city driving. Nothing changed accept the weather.

Your winter gas likely has a higher concentration of ethanol, which will degrade your mileage somewhat.
