- Camaro and Firebird How to Flush Radiator Coolant<br>Step by step instructions for do-it-yourself repairs.
Help with flushing radiator system on 01 trans am
Take the petcock valve off. Completely remove it. This way the water will flow out of the radiator faster for this process, faster then if you just open the valve.
Then remove the t-stat. Then bolt the t-stat housing back onto the water pump.
Take the radiator fill cap off and stick a hose in it.
Start the engine, put the heater on.
Then run the water so the radiator never runs out of water. Just keep it almost full while the engine is running. The t-stat is out so water/coolant will flow immediately and never stop flowing.
10 minutes of that and the water should running out of the radiator drain clear colored. If not, just wait until it starts running clear.
You're done, its all cleaned out.
........Put the t-stat back in, petcock valve back on and fill it up with coolant.
Let the coolant get up to operating temp so the t-stat opens and closes a couple times to make sure all the air is out. Watch the temp gauge while you're waiting, sometimes you'll have bubble in there and the t-stat won't open. This happened to me a few weeks ago. You'll have to massage/squeeze the lower radiator hose a bunch of times to get the coolant surging through the engine to get that bubble moving.
I'd buy a new petcock drain valve before starting this as they sometimes break when removing them. They're only like $3.00.
And in my opinion....you're not going to run cooler with fancy coolants in your radiator. Just fill the radiator up with half a jug of Dexcool, maybe 1 bottle of water wetter if you want, then the rest with water.
Thats it.
