catalytic converter keeps going bad...

About a year ago I had my passenger side catalytic converter replaced because it kept throwing a code by a pontiac dealership up the street. Now, at 60k miles I am having the same exact problem again, but the dealership is telling me that I need to pay them $180 to find out what is making the converter go bad.
No way can I afford this outrageous price right now. Anyone mind sharing any suggestions/ideas? The car is running great still, and the only code it is throwing right now is for the same exact converter.

I can't remember what code it threw, a friend of my mine who works for a Cadillac dealership scanned it and told me it was the same code I had last time for a bad cat.
I practically baby the car for the most part, I would never drive it through any large puddle. I remember one day I opened it up on the highway and that's when I saw the service engine light come on. That wouldn't cause a cat to go bad would it?
Try another dealership maybe?

Without the code, its really hard to tell what's going on. The interesting thing is that its just your passenger side. Looking at the differences, the passenger side is a lot less physically protected as its under the floor while the drivers is up closer to the header. If someone put bad RTV or something like that on one side of your engine, it could foul an O2 sensor, which may give you an erroneous code telling you that you have a bad cat - when its really good.

There's codes, and there's actual physical problems,
and you want an idea which. If the car runs OK but
whines about heater or performance then it may
just be pointless bitching and want codes shut off.

Driving around with a service engine light on with a car you take a lot of pride in wouldn't bother you?
