since when were gaskets mechanical? mine just sit there... some oils ARE more harsh on gaskets and more prone to leak, and simply changing brands can make one start leaking, even of the same viscosity. this was alot worse in the old days when different oils used a completely different base, some would make your car leak like a sieve and other would not

LS1's with their metal gaskets with rubber seals, are not like the old school seals, gaskets, rubber (no metal substrate), cork, RTV etc. If you are leaking oil, you are leaking oil, fix the problem.
I consider a mechanical part a non-electrical part of the engine, call it what you want. I didn't say a moving part.

Define "Mildly Built."
If the internals are stock, 5w or 10w-30 is standard.
If you've got machined internals then go with what your machinist or engine builder is telling you to run in their engine.
