Default Crap Coolant!

So i just got a camera and was filming some videos of the car at idle and start up etc. and when i went to turn the engine off to video record the noise coming from my passenger valve cover i noticed a hissing sound coming from where you add coolant, not the dipstick area but where you add coolant on top of the radiator. now the engine was on a cold start and only on for a few seconds to record the sound, i went to remove the cap to see if it was too full and steam came out and so did about 1/2 a gallon of coolant and went all over the place. Wtf? is it me being a noob and opening that when i wasnt supposed to? Also coolant was coming out of the dipstick area when i just slightly opened the cap.

change name to zeronoob?

Yep, it was pressurized and the coolant was getting hot. Youre suppose to wait for the engine to cool down to the touch, but in your case for a few seconds you should have turned it to the first position to let the steam/pressure out, then turned it to the second to take the cap off.

My aunt made this mistake about 20 years ago and got 2nd and 3rd degree burns all over her side.

You should never ever hear any hissing coming out of the radiator cap.

Get a new cap. The spring tension on yours is gone.

The whole time it was hissing and probably the whole time the engine was running getting warmer, it was pissing into the overflow reservoir. Thats where it goes first.

The only thing a radiator cap does is keep your coolant from pouring out.

The cap has nothing to do with performance.

technically yes it does... depending on how you want to define performance...
if you're in hot weather the engine will be more likely to overheat and do a runaway overheat quickly because the radiator cap is not holding pressure to the 18psi or whatever it was designed to. Coolant under pressure to 18psi won't boil to 280F or something like that. If the system doesn't hold pressure, even though the thermostat is 190-205 F the coolant will easily get to 220F and higher in stop and go traffic, and the radiator fans are not programmed to kick on at low speed until 226F, and high speed at 234F. So if the system isn't under pressure you're coolant is boiling, and you will overheat.

Again, the radiator cap has nothing to do with performance. It's just there to hold the coolant in the system.

If your oil drain plug comes loose, that will effect performance too.

I think we're all talking about parts that are working properly, hence, me telling him to get a NEW cap.

Ah, there should be a notice on the cap saying, DO NOT OPEN CAP WHEN ENGINE IS WARM.

It's ok, we all make mistakes.
