Alternator problem
"everything worked perfectly".

Just fix it with a new one. The new plug with wire costs $10.00 from ebay. Then about $5.00 for the butt connectors and about 20 minutes if your time.
-Unplug that plug. If there's enough slack to splice the new one in without dropping the alternator, do it that way. If not.........
-Drop the alternator
-Fix the wire
Put the alternator back in.
-Plug it back in.
Most likely thats the problem. IF...you know for sure that your battery is ok, which is a free test at most auto parts stores.
When I pulled the exciter wire out, it kinda fell apart. They just don't do well in that section of the engine bay I guess with all the heat and being subjected to road debris. The alternator gets pretty dirty down there. Just like LS6 was saying, the wire can be purchased from ebay for about $10. Even if it ends up being an alternator, I can almost guarantee that wire isn't too far behind it. I would take care of it while you are in there trying to figure things out. I hope you test the battery and not buy a new one unless its bad.
Take that alternator back and get a refund. Tell them it does not work and you're going to go with a different brand.
With the motor running, i removed the positive leg off the battery, and the car died. Doesn't this mean the alt is not working? So i'm thinking there has to be some kind of wire issue. Only 2 wires goto the alt, right ? one from the battery, and the excitor wire ?

Hopefully the part of the excitor wire you replace is the problem, and not somewhere deep into the wiring harness towards the PCM. But usually it is because that little tiny wire takes an *** beating everytime you drive the car. One of the very stupid designs by GM. That wire should be both larger and protected better to withstand the outside elements and heat from the engine/exhaust.

I should fly into Pensacola pretty soon, we go in there sometimes.
