Default Alternator problem

I replaced 2 different alternators in the past year. The problem i'm having is periodic. Sometimes i get in the car, and everything with voltage is fine. Other times it's low, and after about 5-10 minutes the voltage goes to normal. Any ideas? I've checked all the grounds, etc..

Have you checked your battery?
Have you checked for corrosion everywhere?
You wouldn't happen to have power steering fluid dripping onto the alternator would you?

i drove it home, and the battery didn't have enough juice to start the car. There is no corrosion on the battery. I don't believe there is power steering fluid dripping on the alt.

Drive to Advance Auto tomorrow and have them check the battery and alternator, then report back here.

bad battery or corrosion somewhere......is what the symptoms sure sound like.

Get the tests done when you can.

I would just check the connections at the starter. It seems like your battery has a short in it and it can work one time and then not work the next.

But it can be something we all haven't even mentioned yet.

I have the SAME EXACT problem!!! Please let me know what you find out! I did originally have a power steering leak, which was fixed and the alternator replaced, but I still have the problem... I can't trust my car hardly as a daily driver!

You and the original poster either have bad batteries with shorts inside, or other wires can be shorting out or becoming exposed and getting wet.

Could be alot of other things too, but damn....check your batteries and alternators.

Also, make sure your excitor wires are in good condition.

Its the little tiny wire with a plug on it, that plugs into the top of the alternator. If you pop the hood you can look straight down at the alternator and see it plugged in. Alot of times they break and get ripped, stretched and torn. That wire is responsible for starting the alternator charging AFTER the engine is started. Its a little ******.

ok, i checked that one earlier, and it's plugged in. Can i buy a new one, and just splice it in, to double check?

DO NOT solder it. I know people that have done it that way and it did not work. Don't ask me why.
Do it the way I did it. Those plastic 2 ended couplers that you stick the wire in each end, then crimp them with a plyer. Then I suggest using that shrinking **** that you use with a lighter, just to keep moisture out.

Its electrical stuff. You cut the wire, then you take the old wire end and stick it into this coupler, then you take the new wire end and stick it in the other end of thie same coupler. Then you squeeze it with plyers at each end. There's metal built into the plastic coupler at each end where the wire ends go in. When you squeeze the ends you clamp down on the wire ends and now the wire has been fixed. Then use that shrink wrap stuff.

They have all this stuff at any auto parts store.

They're called "butt connectors".
These are actually heat shrinkable ones. You crimp the wire ends where the metal tubes inside are (you can see the metal tubes), then you heat shrink each end around the wire to make it waterproof.

Heat shrink: They sell them in 2 inch lengths that you slide over the wire, crimp them together with the BUTT CONNECTOR....then slide the shrink tube over the entire connector and use a lighter to shrink it and seal around the connector.

+1
I switched my exciter wire due to charging problems as well. I used butt connectors like LS6 mentioned and everything worked perfectly.

MTN Z, so you were having the same charging problems, as i've discussed ? And fixing the exciter wire fixed the problem?
