Jeezuz....thats way hot. Thats sucks. I'd get them programmed to come one earlier...if the LT1 stuff can be. You should also get a cooler t-stat.

Does anyone know the normal operating temp for the 5.7L V8?
Will putting in a lower temp thermostat actually help keep the temp lower?
how the heck do I program the fans to come on earlier?

I am wondering if I should put a new water pump in??? It doesn't appear to be leaking and I know the coolant is flowing...I just don't know why else it would get so hot???

If the coolant is flowing the water pump is fine. Go get it scanned to see what your true temps are. You could be chasing nothing.

Put in a 160* tstat today. I think the low speed fan isn't kicking in so the coolant is getting to 235* before the high speed fan kicks in...not sure????

I;m not sure about how the fans work on LT1's.....but LS1 fans come "on" and "off" together AND they also go into "low" and "high" together.

So, if LT1's also work like LS1's....you have a fan issue.

Either way, get the PCM tuned to come on earlier, or the 160 t-stat is kind of useless.

Think about it:

First time the t-stat opens up and trades the hot coolant with the cool coolant in the radiator, its gonna close once it feels the tail end of the cool coolant after it flows full circle. Now the coolant in the radiator is ~160* and starting to cool by ram air from the lower air dam, but with no help of the fans. Then when the cool coolant that just went into the engine/heads gets to ~160*, (((or actually a little higher because the temp sensor is not near the t-stat, so it'll be alot hotter than 160 by the time the t-stat opens up))), it'll open again and trade coolant. Each time it makes a full circle ciculation it'll keep getting hotter and hotter IF your fans are not coming on to help cool the coolant, and soon that 160* t-stat will remain open and you will just be continually heating the continuous flow of coolant. You're dead!!!!

Get the fans to come on around 185*-195*.

And make sure the fans (LT1's) are supposed to work the way your's are...or if you have a problem.

I really don't know how the fans are supposed to work???? so they could be working like they are supposed to. I know I have a driver's side fan which comes on with the AC and I know the passenger side fan comes on at 230ish degrees. Other than that I am not sure what they are supposed to do and if they are doing it? I am new to this car! I am assuming I would have to take it somewhere to get the computer programed to have the fans come on earlier?
