i figured out what my problem was! i replaced the ignition switch above the steering column. apparently the starter just wasnt getting enough juice on the smaller wire coming from the ignition switch. the bendex would click a lot of the time against the flexplate and when it did engage fully, sometimes it would grind (i guess due to not staying extended all the way while turning) and then sometimes break the nose off. may not be the same problem you're having but it was a fix in my case.
BINGO! I went through this exact same thing with the 408 i had in my old truck, after about 5 starters it ended up busting a rod on startup.
