Default Running temp

My car had been running hot for a few months, I replaced the thermostat to a SLP 160 degree. It didn't really help the running remps. A few times this past month it's gotten up to 230 and that was cruzing on the highway.. What should I do here? I already changed the coolant temp sensor on the driver side of the engine and the thermostat.

Putting in a 160 t-stat doesn't help unless you have a tuner program your PCM so your fans come on sooner. I have a 427ci with a 160 t-stat in south Florida crazy hot weather...BUT my fans come on sooner to quickly start cooling that HOT coolant that just entered the radiator...and that makes all the difference.

When your t-stat opens up at 160* your hot coolant that is entering the radiator to start cooling doesn't have a chance to cool before the coolant in the head/engine gets to 160* again and opens the t-stat again. Because the stock fan settings come one beyong 210*. So you get into a cycle that you can't win...unless your steadily cruising on the highway, then the lower air dam is plenty to cool that radiator coolant. City driving..you're screwed.

Get them tuned to come on at about 185*-190*. I think thats what my are tuned for and my engine stays friggin cool as hell, well cooler than hell

If you're cruising on the highway and it gets that hot, you have other problems. What's your air dam look like?

the plastic piece that's supposed to be there was gone when I bought the car... Does that have a big affect on the running temps?

Yes it does. Also, flush your coolant.

Thats hilarious. You're the second person this week that has either removed their lower front air dam....or does not have one.

IT MUST BE THERE.....especially for highway driving cooling.

Go buy one and put it on.

Yeah, no air dam = little air getting directed to the radiator = running hot.

Should be the same. Air dam is air dam, not engine specific. I believe even the radiators are the same between the V6 and the LS1.
