Default Cheap way to fix your blinker issues.

I have been having blinker issues for the past 4 months. It started with just a bulb going out. Well, then both went out, etc. I found that both of the housings were cracked/damaged and would fill up with water when it rained.

I swapped out the housing, but it was way too late for the pigtails. I have been driving around for months without a blinker because I could not fathom paying $55.00+ from the dealer for each stupid pigtail. Tonight I had a bright idea.

I went to the parts store and looked in the "help" section. You know, where they have all the manual window handles, spare random reproduction parts for domestic vehicles. Well what do ya know, they had a GM 3wire rear brake, blinker, tail light socket. I figured, for $8.00 bucks I can try this out for the front. They are practically the same damn part. They have the same markings for the wire orientations, same plastic grooves to fit in the housing and the stop tab to keep it from rotating out.

Its the exact generic replacement. No need to get the specific one from the dealer, this is a cheap reproduction of the exact same part. I cut the old one out. Wired the new one in, and it worked like a charm. Check out the pictures below to compare the two. This cost $16.00 instead of $110.00 to fix my blinker problems. P/N 85881 I will keep this updated of any issues being that it is made in China.

What parts store had them?

Good idea, I have to do this. I've not had my two front blinkers for the past 7 years.

Good to know. Figured I would post it up because I haven't seen anything posted before, and I almost pulled the trigger on the $55.00 pigtails.

I did the same thing about a month ago. I found the same part in both OReilys and Autozone for about $8. Mine were all cooked and terrible, and I had no choice but replace them.

^ Secretaries call the trun signal indicator a "blinker".

And a TV remote control is a "flipper".

Thanks to 1SLwLS1 for helping us save a few bucks.

Thanks, and all the vendors I have shopped are $53.99 + shipping and the dealer at a discounted cost is $55.00. I am in Houston, maybe we have greedy dealers?

my pigtails look terrible but still work. should i replace it? on my driver's side, every 6 weeks the blinker goes out. i found out that it is hitting the side of the blinker housing, melted the plastic, and caused the melted plastic to buldge out, causing the replacement light to once again hit the melted plastic and break. i finally drilled out the melted plastic, then a year later, right before christmas, it busted again. i replaced it and so far in the last month it has been okay, but just know this will repeat itself again.

i'm just wondering no matter how bad the pigtail looks, if it still works, what's the point of replacing it?

Dude it's 8 bucks. I think a set of 3457 NALL costs like 5. It's worth it to go ahead and replace it this way if you go through bulbs every 6 weeks.

How did you guys swap your wires over?

I started with turning the headlights on, than back to parking lights and disconnected the battery. Then removed that black cover over the headlights and pulled the socket up through there.

Didn't know if anyone had an easier way to access them.

Theres a trap door in your bumper just in front of your tires underneath. Thats the easiest place to do it. I'd load up that socket with di-electric grease to keep out moisture otherwise it'll just corrode again

Spent my $16.00 today, fixing mine tomorrow.

Don't go to PepBoys, they charge $19.00 each for the same identical part.

My LT1 rear light harness is also in need of some help so I'm going to replace all my three wire connections with these. Total cost is cheaper than one of the GM replacement pigtails.

Thanks...
