Default Ticking

I recently bought a 99 z28 and it has a really annoying fast ticking noise every time the car is running. my friend said it might be lifter tick but im not sure. if it is lifter tick how can i fix it? is that expensive to fix? oh and i also have a noise that sounds like a bird chirp. i replaced the serp belt and it still makes the noise, and the noise gets twice as bad when it rains.

the chirp is most likely the idler pulley, do a search on here for idler pulley, there's writeups on how to remove and clean/relube them easily rather than buying a new one.

the fast tick, if it goes with engine rpm, off the top of my head can be either a lifter, piston slap, noisy injector(s), or the fuel vapor purge valve, or possibly a bent pushrod.
if it's piston slap don't worry about it,
and if it's lifters don't worry about it either it won't hurt anything- best thing to do is change the oil every 1000 miles for like 5000 miles to flush things out. I would stay away from the engine flushes. Noisy injectors nothing you can really do,
and the FVPV you could replace, checking pushrods would require pulling and checking but if the engine runs strong at 5000 rpm then it most likely isn't a bent pushrod.

sounds like lifters ticking. a video would help alot. these cars have very loud valvetrains. But if its the lifters its a pain because the heads need to come off. Take off your valvecovers and check pushrods make sure they all look okay. How many miles on the car??? Is the car modded at all??? We need more info to determine this.

105,000 miles. longtube headers, 3 inch exhaust, ls6 intake, slp lid, k&n filter, msd wires, comp tune, spec clutch. i mean the car runs really strong but every time i let off the gas it becomes a little jerky. and there is one other problem besides the ticking noise. every time i drive in the rain my engine bogs down really bad and i have to have it in WOT pretty much to keep it from dying.

given the long tube headers, if you have to go WOT when it rains it sounds like the O2's are crapping out, possibly the wiring to them. It should throw a code,
however you mention computer tune so that could be the bulk of the problem right there, especially the jerkiness when you let of the gas.

after I got done with my heads/cam install my car was ticking and tried swithcing to a heavier weight oil and different filter and it's now alot better. It ticks every so often but goes away quickly. I'm not saying do this, i'm just saying what worked for me. You haven't changed heads or any valvetrain components so it could just be worn out parts.
THe other issue with the rain deal I'm not sure what that could be. Possibly electrical related. maybe some electrical gurros could chime in!!!

well i looked at the O2s and they all look fine from what i could see. About the oil, my friend said he put lucas additive in his car and it made the ticking noise go away. So?..

Few things first off, the car is an m6 I take it, these are notorious bent pushrods because of over revving. Does the tick get faster with rpms? A video would really help as a lifter/piston slap/bent PR's are fairly different sounds. The squek is most likely a pulley although I just replaced a buddys alternator because it squeaked just as you say. Take the belt off apply pressure to all the pulleys and spin with your hand to see if they make noise. The o2 sensor may still be bad they normally dont "look" bad is it throwing a code? Also it could be shorting the connections on the sensor make sure theyre good. Lastly the headers may have burned through the jacket on the wires so be careful and see if thats all good.

Yea i'm pretty sure the ticking gets faster with acceleration. and no its not throwing any codes. and ill get a video up as soon as i can.

Well yours is pretty stock. Does yours sound like a sewing machine? Do you have piston slap? Just wondering...

Yup, 100% stock, don't know if it's piston slap or if it's the lifters or what, but yeah it ticks. Next oil change I might go for heavier oil to see if that quiets it down, but I doubt it will, LS1s are just big noisy pushrod engines...

My wife's 2001 Vette sounds like it has a lifter ticking on it. We changed to Redline oil and it has gotten much quieter since then.

My guess is exhaust leak.... especially if its a ticking coming from near the side of the engine and rises and falls with RPM.
