Noise from rear of car
Noise from rear of car I have a 98 Trans Am with stock gears. Last fall before I put it in storage I started to hear a strange whining noise from the rear of the car. This noise only occurs when I'm going at a near idle speed turning the wheel all the way one way or the other. I checked power steering fluid and it is fine, and I changed the rear diff. fluid and it still makes the noise. Anyone have any ideas what this sound may be?
well power steering fluid won't have anything to do with the rear of your car. how many miles are on the rear end? does the sound get louder as you drive faster, or louder as you slow down? any leaks? try shutting off your car when you are coasting down a hill and see what you hear.
The sound is constant at an idle speed turning sharp either way. I can do as fast or as slow as I want in a straight line and there's no sound. You can hear it when you pull into my drive or turn a sharp corner like that. My car has just turned over 70,000 on it, and as far as I know nothing has been changed on the rear.
do you know what kind of posi you have? when was the last time you changed the fluid? Did you use the limited slip additive? can you have someone listen outside of the car when you turn? Could be anything from an axle bearing, to your posi we just have to start and narrow it down...
Put your car on some stand from the back and get that tail lifted about 24 inches from the ground and put it on drive and see if the wheels are even and not waggling. Your axle may be bent.. Any harsh cornering, or curb checking?
No harsh cornering or curb checking so I don't think my axle is bent. I changed the fluid when I first heard the noise, and drove it since then and the noise is still there. I have a stock rearend so whatever the posi is for that and I did not add any additive because I didn't think it called for any.

ok, when I get it out for this summer I'm going to check my rear diff. fluid, and add the additive. I'm hoping it's nothing to be worried about but I've had the car a year and a half and I just started hearing this noise last fall. Thanks for all you're help! If anyone has had a similar problem and has a fix let me know, thanks!
