Default AC issue

Seems pretty simple, after a long drive, 1fstz and I get out of his 90 hardbody PU and hear a hissing sound, sounds like a tire is going flat. Turns out one of the ac line fittings has apparently come loose. So we snug it up and the AC is blowing hot. It hadnt't been doing great the whole day though come to think about it. So I say no biggie we can throw a can in and it should be all good. We get some freon the next day and go to stick it in, gauge is showing the system at 0 psi, and we cant get it to take in the system. System is so low now the compressor isnt even coming on. But with 110 psi in the freon can it wont go into the ac system. Changed shrader valves to a know good one and still nothing. Tried the freon can on another car and it took. Ideas?
Do I need to hot wire the compressor to get it to take the charge?

So is that to say that in order for the system to accept the can of coolant, the compressor has to be running? If so, how the hell would you get the compressor to kick on and make it happen... other than ghetto rigging a jumper??

If you have a laptop, software and cable you can command engage the clutch. Ten cents worth of wire makes more sense to me.
