Default Sqeaks when started and may eventually stop

There is a squeak that is there once the car starts, in some cases it will work its way off, but times where it wont stop at all...i bought some silicon spray and applied to the belt, that helps for just a few seconds then it comes back again, the water pump is new, everything else is not, but visual inspection seems ok. Belt is about 5yrs old and 2 of those years the car was not driven.

How can you check the pulleys? is it just visual inspection? how do you know if they are bad?

Take off the belt and spin each individual pulley... my guess is idler pulley or could be your a/c drive belt/tensioner..

Wait what kind of car you got?

You can use a mechanic's stethoscope with an extended probe (a piece of cut off coat hanger will work). The bad bearing will be readily found.

The car is a 99 TA, and havent priced a mechanics stethoscope, are they inexpensive? Ill look around at local auto parts..

thanks.. i looked around and found one locally at a tool store for $4.99

I also took the accessory belt off, try to get the A/C belt off tomorrow, it looks like the main belt needs to be replaced, and when that belt was replaced about 5 years ago, i know we didnt replace the a/c belt, could be the problem, will replace both belts this weekend. Now since i have the belt off, what exactly am i checking for? i mean i can spin all the pulleys, the dont spin freely, but they do spin, would it benefit any if i replace them with underdrive pulleys? or is that a waste of time and money?

it is your belt's, 5 years old it is time. it does not matter if you have driven it or not, rubber starts to deteriorate when subjected to oils and such.

Picked up the mechanics stethoscope for $5, tested all the pulleys with the belts off, found that the A/C tensioner was one problem, and def heard weird noise from the compressor, so opted to replace the tensioner first, and that with new belts got rid of the noise.. Oh and by the way, with no belts on and car running, squeaking was still there. Squeaking is gone, all you hear now is the purr of the car. Now on to the exhaust system so we can get it inspected. Thanks for the suggestions.
