Default Squeaking Pulleys?

I've been hearing a squeaking noise lately that I've been led to believe is the idler pulleys. I plan on repacking/replacing them this weekend, but the problem is this: I only hear the noise once every 20-30 startups, and only for about 10 seconds after startup. This makes identifying the culprit pulley very difficult, and also makes me think that there may be a different problem than bad bearings. Any thoughts?

Repack em all, and see if it stops. Also, how old is your belt?

That sounds more like belt to me.

I initially thought belt as well, but was told otherwise. I'm not sure how old it is, since I bought the car fairly recently, but I'll check the service records and find out. Might just go ahead and replace while I'm at it.

I repacked all of mine with heavy duty maritime grease in about 15 minutes. Its very easy to do. No more squeaks at all.

Assuming it is the pulleys, if the bearings are beyond repair, should i just got to autozone or something and get new pulleys? Or would it be better to go to a dealer to get oem? I can't seem to find much in terms of aftermarket idlers.

The bearings are very sturdy. Once you look in there you will see what I mean. They are large ball bearings in a captive race. they just get noisy when they dry out. My looked like they were dry for years and had no discernible damage. Make sure you check carefully if you get them at autozone or something, I bought one and it was the wrong size and chewed up my alternator bracket.

Thanks for your help. I'll get on it this weekend. So I just need some sort of bearing grease? What about tools? I have access to a pretty extensive shop (a friend of mine is a certified mechanic and avid mopar collector), so there shouldn't be any specialty tools or anything that I'll need to pick up, right?

Here ya go: https://ls1tech.com/forums/general-m...r-pulleys.html I cant remember what size bits/sockets for each pulley but just skim through that thread and you'll find them. No special tools required, and very simple.

PS: I remember them saying something about getting a quality T50 Torx bit, but I think thats for the AC pulleys.

Good luck with this! In my case, it seems like the ps pulley killed my power steering pump. The mechanic insisted to have the ps pulley changed asap. The ps was replaced and I still hear a whinning noise. I recently bought the ps pulley from GM ($50) because no one had one. All I need now is a pulley tool from autozone to remove and install it. I hope this works!

Mine has been doing this for the past month on start ups, I wasn't for sure if it was my idler pulley or not. I have my alternator relocated and an idler pulley up top. My belt is fairly new, less then 200 miles on it. I guess it has to be the idler pulley or PS, alternator is fairly new as well. Always something I guess.

This sounds like the same problem I'm having. I hadn't heard of it before, so I was unsure. I guess I'll find out tomorrow.
