Default Mobil 1 5w30

No, this isn't an oil war thread and I'm not trying to spark one. I have a question regarding when the formulation changed for 5w30. The tech sheets on Mobil 1 now show 5w30 is at 11.3 at operating temp, close to German Castrol and a bit beefier than your average 5w30. 0w30 and 10w30 still show 10. The last time I ran Mobil 1 5w30 was when I bought the car back in 2007. If it was after then, I just might go to using the $21 5 quart jugs from Walmart.

i had pulled together a lot of motor oil info a while back, where 5w-30 syn was 10.0cSt@100C and I am pretty sure their number now, which is 11.1cSt@100C happened after 2007.

However, you stated 11.3. Currently mobil is stating 11.1 for 5w-30 http://www.mobil.com/USA-English/Lub...il1_5W-30.aspx

I also know when I looked up numbers way back when for all the major brands, I found obvious numerical typos, so who's to know if 11.3 or 11.1 is not actually supposed to be 10.3 or 10.1. And if that change is correct, you will never know if you have that formulation buying it off the shelf. Who knows how long it'll be before that new batch reaches shelves, mobil isn't like budweiser, there's no born on date and they're not gonna pull stock after 180 days.

my advice for what it's worth, if you want a heavier viscosity oil then get a heavier viscosity that will be sae 40 or sae 50 at operating temp. It's pointless to worry about an in-grade change from 10.x to 11.x.

and i'm assuming you're referring to fully synthetic 5w-30 mobil-1, that's what I am referring to. I thought that was much more expensive than $21 for 5 quarts? There's also mobil clean 5000, mobil clean 7500, mobil clean high mileage... all marketing bullshit.

Yeah, I was referring to the standard Full Synthetic 5w30. It said 11.3 last week. Strange. I know they have to come up with an average viscosity for their formulation and the last batch of testing must have shown a change. Yes, $21 for 5 quarts, but that's only if you buy the jugs from Walmart. That's the current sale price. I think the regular price was $24. It's not that I really need thicker oil, my car's internals are stock. I just noticed the last time I ran a thinner rated 30 I was not happy with the valvetrain noise that kicked up. German Castrol is always my first choice, I just wish I could get it in the 5 quart jugs like the other Castrol Syntecs at walmart. Between my GTO and the Jaguar I use almost 14 quarts at a time since I change the oil at the same time. It gets pricey if I can't get GC or M1 0w40 on sale. Sometimes I'm lucky to find them on the shelf here. I've only found one Autozone in the area that regularly carries them.
