Engine table: how to clean block?

Engine table: how to clean block? I want to make an engine table out of my old ls1.
I have the shortblock sitting around. what is the best way to clean it up by hand? I don't want to have to take it to a fancy shop.
Any ideas where to get glass and what size it should be? I would like to have it ordered so i can just throw it together one day.
Also, it is a blown engine (rod bearing) that would need machine work eventually. But, theoretically would taking it apart and using it as an engine table for a while hurt it from being used again as a rebuild block?

The best way would be to hot tank it IMHO. I know you said you wouldn't want to take it to a shop, but if your going to rebuild it later, it should be done either way. Using it as a table shouldn't hurt it, as long as you don't scrape up the pan rail.
