starter problem?

Default starter problem?

2002 ls1 with 24k on the clock
original starter
i drive this car weekly for about 15-20 miles a trip never had a problem, yesterday i took it out and it started fine and everything but wen i went to the gas station to fill up and went to restart it, there was no power at all, no clicking or anything but yet the battery is perfect and all the lights and radio worked like it should.
i kept trying to turn the key over and over and still nothing at all, so im led to believe its the starter? i jacked up the car in the gas station and tapped the starter while a friend tried to turn it over and it worked after a few trys.
does this definatley mean i need a new starter or did i just get lucky it worked?
also isnt this kind of odd that it would go out on me with 24k miles on it?
do i need to remove my longtube header to replace it?

VATS is the Vehicle Anti Theft thingie that works with the resistor chip in your ignition key. If this was the problem, you'd see the "security" light lit on the dashboard.

As the starter worked after you rapped on it, I would say it is the starter. If it starts happening often, you'll need to change it. How hard it is with long tubes is a variable.

Every once in a while, my car does the same-original starter at almost 190K miles. However, I feel it's the ignition switch on the steering column.

My dad had this same exact problem with his 01 Z06. He would reach underneath and tap the starter solenoid with a wooden handle and have my mom start it. It's the starter solenoid, but since you can't replace just that you have to just buy a new starter. He replaced it finally and hasn't had the problem since.

I've had this happen to me twice. I just pulled and re-installed the starter fuse and it started right up.

i actually just tried starting it up today and it turned right over with no problem, drove it around for 30min and shut it off in my driveway and restarted it again and it turned over again with no problem....so now im confused. lol

Id say starter. Mine did the same..off and on then never worked again. Easy fix though.
