Default 2002 Camaro Stalls/Low Voltage

Hey All,

I'm usually a lurker here but the wife's Camaro (ls1 w/auto) seems to be developing an intermittent problem. It wants to stall on occasion and when it does so, the voltage goes below 13 volts. It also has a high pitched whine (sounds like a jet engine) when first started up. It starts up okay, but the problem will appear at odd times and then go away.

My thought is the bearings are bad in the alternator and generating alot of heat which is causing the voltage regulator and the rectifier to overheat and get flaky. Before I plop down $170 for a new alternator, I wanted to see what someone else thinks or if anyone else ever had this problem and what the solution was. Thanks for any help.

Paul

Pop the belt off and check the bearings, that's how I found my alternator had bad bearings.
