Battery Cable
Started having trouble with cranking, so bought a new
battery and figured I'd check the cable since two failed
Delcos had chowed the terminal. I'd cleaned & solder-
tinned that and it was doing OK.
The present battery didn't seem to be leaking but the
cable in the crimp was all full of white salt. This is not
good and not repairable, too corroded. The factory cable
is all bare copper in crimp connections and seems very
corrosion prone. Worse than old school ones with the
wire embedded in the cast lead. You won't see this
without removing the boot.
I ordered up a replacement from RockAuto, it came as
a Delco box. The replacement one has the head end
soldered into the terminal butt, which should be a lot
more corrosion-proof. I soldered the other terminals
(starter, alt, fuse) for luck.
If you have mysterious cranking problems that don't
respond to a new battery, check it out.
