Default Starter Bad??

Ok, I have been having this problem for a while and I think I may have figured it out. Just looking for confirmation from you guys.. Every so often I will get in the car, turn the key, and when I start the car I get not even so much as a click.. All dash lights are on and security light come on for a few seconnds and goes off. There is no ryhme or reason for when the car decides to do it. I thought it was heat related but this morning (after sitting all night) it did it so heat isnt an issue. I finally decided to "jump" the starter. If you have seen the selenoid you know there are two posts with 13mm nuts and one post with an 8mm nut. All I did was run an wire from the 8mm nut to a place near the battery so that if the car ever did it and I was stranded I could hit that wire against the positive battery terminal and jump the starter with it.. I tested the wire several times to make sure it worked. Turn the key to "on" position, get out, touch wire to battery, and whala!! This morning the car wouldnt start so I got out and touched the wire to the battery and nothing.. big sparks but no starting action.. This is the first time I had to try the wire jump when the car didnt want to start.. all the previous times before was simply for testing purposes and the ignition could have started the car.. What that told me is that the selenoid MUST have something wrong What do you guys think?? I would just run and buy a starter but the wifey is pissed about the amount of money we have spent this season on the car already and I want to be sure I am not waisting money on a starter that wont fix the problem..

My T/A has been doing the same thing and at first we thought it was the starter, but now we are leaning towards the VATS system. Havent figured it out for sure yet but would like to know if anyone else had this problem in the past and fixed it.

I didnt think it was VATS because the "security" doesnt come on and stay on.. just comes on for a few seconds after turning the key on like its supposed to.

Occasional short maybe in the starter itself.. Since I ran a jumper wire straight from the starter to the battery it should bypass any short within the car.. I guess I should bite the bullet and buy a starter.. I just hate to spend the money on it and find out its some other dumb problem

I might try that today since it appears the car is now not starting at all.. I have tried starting it for two days now with no luck.. Tonight I will try a relay and if that doesnt work I will try the starter and post up the results...

I completely forgot to update this post.. I purchased a warranty with the car when I bought it so I figured I would let them mess with it. Got the car back the same day I took it to the dealership.. They smacked a starter on it and it has started every time since then.. sorry for digging up an old thread, just wanted to update is all..

My starter was definitely the reason my car wouldn't turnover too. Thanks for the reply!
