Default Will not start sometimes

Hello, everyone,, thanks for a great site,, hope to have some help with my problem

I have 2001 Camerao Z-28 Ls1 bone stock,, 127k miles

been running great but just began not starting quickly! First begain not starting untill a few turns of the key start, I do not like to crank for long periods because of fuel injection and running battery down. After about 3 to 10 key offs and retrys, boom it fires normaly. Cold starts were not a problem, hot was. Days and miles later, did it again, and again got it running on its own. Weeks later cold start no go! After many attempts and a battery running down, and jumping with another battery, no start. Come out later n the day,, bam,, started first start. Insalled new fuel filter since orginal! Oh yes problem solved,, not,, few days later after many starts,, same problem. A few short starter spins to key off and on to start, varoomm it starts fine. Stuck out the other day, 20 trys,, battery going down,, jump other car, first spin, bam , started
Not sure what to do,, getting another battery,, and waiting to get a fuel pressure tester gage, Pump is stock I think, pump I hear running up with key on. Oh and no codes

Any suggestion,, Thanks Tim in Tampa

Could it be your VATS is not functioning properly.

I think a broken reluctor wheel can cause this. Maybe you'll get lucky and its just a failing Crank Shaft Position sensor. Or a failing Cam sensor.

And NO...you won't necessarily get codes for them when they are in the failing stage.

I'm not sure which one.....but the crankshaft or camshaft position sensor controls spark.

A failing MAF can also cause a "NO START" situation.

If the crank sensor is out or wires are shorting it will not start but should throw a code.

If the cam sensors are out it will start, it's just difficult. I would expect a code there too.

You might not smell fuel out of the exhaust....when the engine is just turning over it sucks air in through the intake. When it starts then it blasts air (exhaust) out.

Get a fuel pressure tester, thats free.

Get a code scan, even if the SES light is out....thats free.

Clean the MAF, thats cheap. But also check to see if its even working. A failing MAF will cause a "no start".

You can change the Crankshaft Position sensor in 15 minutes.....if it works, great...if it doesn't return it for a refund......thats free.

Cam Position sensor...little bit of a job, you have to remove the intake to change it. I have one for sale, brand new in the box AC Delco.....$50.00 shipped. If thats the issue.

Remove a spark plug, any plug, put the wire back on, turn it over and have someone tell you if its sparking...takes 10 minutes.......thats free.

Check the ground wire from the PCM-to-Engine........they have been coming loose on people more and more lately as these cars get older and older.

Hey, check to see if you need a new key. Those resistors get worn out and will cause issues. Just remembered someone had that problem here, getting a new key at the dealer fixed it.

VATS might be the cause, is the security light flashing when you start the car?

thanks for all the help, I think I finally found the problem, hope my adventure will help others. In the relay and fuse box under the hood is a relay for the starter and identical one for the Ingition. We swapp them around and , bom it started. And the starter is working fine. Shortly after hoping this is the proplem area, we swapped them back and they both work fine. Wanting to be curious, the igntion relay was opened up for inspection, and it looked fine. So what was causeing the irratic problem of no fire or injectors work. My mechanic said that GM is known for having contact trouble at the base of the relay bank connectors. This sound logical because it was funny, once when the hood was opened to jump the car battery, it started. Concusion, the viberation of the hood release helped with the contact of the relay. I will purchase a spare and spray some contact cleaner on the plug , oh and ad some dierectic electicial grease to the relay contacts. been about 20 starts and two week, working fine!

thanks
Tim
