Without using an obd scanner, there is a way to check codes from your dashboard.....
Anybody have an idea on how this is accomplished using your ignition key.

No. That function died with the expansion of OBD-II. There are far too many codes available to flash back to you in code.
You can get a cheap scanner to give you the codes.
