Default Cracking noise from power steering???

Started hearing a cracking noise from my steering when turning side to side. Plenty of fluid in PS reservoir. Steering seems to be getting stiffer. ANY IDEAS?

I am thinking the PS pump went out. If it did, what's the noise from? Thought the fluid was just for hydraulic purposes, not lubrication. Anyone know?

Thanx guys

Cracking or banging. Are your headers hitting it?

Got under the car while my son turned the steering wheel back and forth and the sound was coming from the rack n pinion steering setup underneath.... At least I thought... I can double check.

Definitely not banging. More like crackling.
